GM SIGNS ON AS OFFICIAL PACE CAR OF MOSPORT
General Motors of Canada Ltd., a long-time supporter of Mosport, will be the official vehicle for the SportsCar Mosport Festival Labour Day Weekend program (Aug. 28-31).
The agreement, announced today, reinforces GM’s commitment to Mosport and motorsport in Canada. GM will likely use the Chevrolet/Pontiac brands to provide the official pace car, parade cars and support vehicles. GM will also have an extensive product display at the track all weekend.
"General Motors of Canada has been associated with Mosport for many years," Ross Hawe, manager of shows and exhibits said. "It is one of the premier tracks in North America and has been the training ground for most of Canada’s top racers, including Paul Tracy, Ron and Rob Fellows, Scott Goodyear and many others - both at the professional and grassroots level.
"We are excited about the steps IMSG Properties Ltd. is taking to restore the stature of the track and we are looking forward to a great Labor Day weekend of racing and even greater things next season. SportsCar has a number of excellent series with very competitive fields. Many of their drivers have competed at Mosport in the past."
"We are very proud of our long association with Mosport, especially with the late Harvey Hudes," Earl Dickinson, manager of GM motorsport, said. "Harvey was a gentleman and a wonderful man with whom to do business. He was always a supporter of GM’s motorsport program. He was the first one to agree to run the Player’s/GM Challenge Series when we started it in 1986 and he was just as big a booster of it in its final year (1992)."
In addition to a full program of SportsCar events, there will be an SCCA Trans-Am race and other races.
Canadian music star Tom Cochrane will headline a giant 12-hour music festival on Saturday, Aug. 30. Joining Cochrane will be The Goo Goo Dolls, Sass Jordan and Marcia Ball, as well as other popular Canadian groups.
Action starts Thursday, Aug. 28 when the 2.459-mile circuit opens for practice to all racers. Friday, the track opens for practice and qualifying at 8 a.m. Fans can purchase tickets by calling TicketMaster at (416) 870-1212 in the Toronto area. Outside the GTA (Greater Toronto Area), contact your local TicketMaster outlet.
