LIGHT RACING HOSTS TEENS AT PIKES PEAK INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY Professional Racers Reach Out to Youth

SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA (September 28, 1997)--Motorsports Ministries' Light Racing Division sponsored a group of teens from Denver, Colorado at the Festival of Road Racing/The Children's Hospital Grand Prix of Colorado at Pikes Peak International Raceway. The event was held September 26- 28, 1997 and was co-sanctioned by SCCA ProRacing, based in Denver, and Professional SportsCar Racing. The young people were exposed to a message of positive moral values shared by the drivers they met. Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) organized the group, led by Mr. Jim Wurst. The young people received a Light Racing shirt provided by Trans-Am driver Brian Simo's "No Fear" shirt company. The shirt logo, "Today is a good time for a reality check," reflected the need for young people to find direction in life. One focus of CEF in Denver is inner-city children and teens.

"This is one of many similar 'day at the track' opportunities being offered to young people at various venues across the country," said Richard Anderson, President of Motorsports Ministries. "Similar groups have met the personalities of sports car racing at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut, Watkins Glen International in New York, the Minneapolis Street Circuit in Minnesota, Mosport Park in Ontario, Canada, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada and this weekend in Colorado Springs. We are thankful to Professional SportsCar Racing, Inc. and the Sports Car Club of America's ProRacing for their support of this program." The ten teens and three adults enjoyed meeting many of the drivers, and crew members. They learned a lot about racing but also listened intently as driver Terry Borcheller shared with them from his life.

"We would love to bring another group in the future," said Wurst. "This has been a wonderful time for these boys and I know they are going home encouraged. They come from some difficult backgrounds." The group watched the Trans Am and World Challenge races following their time with Light Racing.

Motorsports Ministries is a non-denominational ministry focusing on the spiritual and emotional needs of the racing community. Light Racing is an outreach arm focused on youth including school assemblies, community sponsored events and church programs to influence teens with this positive message.
