LIGHT RACING HOSTS TEENS AT MOSPORT PARK
21 August, 1997
Professional Racers Reach Out to Youth
SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA -- Motorsports Ministries' Light Racing Division announced that they will sponsor a group of teens from the London, Ontario at the Professional SportsCar Racing/SCCA Pro Racing Mosport Festival at Mosport Park, near Bowmanville, Ontario Canada. The event is scheduled for August 29-31, 1997. The group will be exposed to a message of positive moral values shared by the drivers they meet. The teens will receive a Light Racing shirt provided by Trans-Am driver Brian Simo's "No Fear" shirt company and will meet the personalities of the Exxon World SportsCar, Exxon Supreme GT Series, Speedvision Cup, and Trans-Am Racing. "Light Racing has provided similar 'day at the track' opportunities for young people at various venues across the country," said Richard Anderson, President of Motorsports Ministries. "This year similar groups have met drivers from both Professional SportsCar Racing, Inc. and SCCA's Pro Racing Trans-Am Championship at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut, at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, New York, and at the Minneapolis street course in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We are thankful to the sanctioning bodies and the drivers for their support of this program." The teens who have attended these days at the track have met the Exxon World SportsCar Championship's 1997 points leader Elliott Forbes-Robinson, who drives the Ford Riley & Scott Mark III (R&S) along with Dyson Racing teammates Butch Leitzinger and James Weaver, 1996 champion Wayne Taylor, driver of the Toshiba sponsored Oldsmobile R&S with Doyle Racing, 1995 champion Fermin Velez and team owner Eduardo Dibos who field the Dibos Racing Ferrari 333SP, and Jim Downing and Tim McAdam in the Downing Atlanta Mazda Kudzu. They have met Exxon Supreme GT Series drivers Andy Wallace and Doc Bundy, driving the Panoz GTR1, and Derek Hill and Javier Quiros with the BMW Prototype Technology Group. They have met with SPEEDVISION Cup Endurance Championship drivers Terry Borcheller, who drives the Massari-Muller Racing BMW and Jason Priestley, driver of the Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R. Priestley is well known to the teens as the star of television's "90210." Borcheller spent 45 minutes with the group at Lime Rock, sharing from his life a message of hope and encouragement. In the Trans Am Championship, the teens have been able to talk with Tom Kendall, the series champion who clinched his fourth title at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin on August 15th, current series runner up Dorsey Schroeder, Jon Gooden, Brian Simo, Mike Borkowski, Bob Ruman, Peter Shea, and R. J. Valentine. Motorsports Ministries is a non-denominational ministry focusing on the spiritual and emotional needs of the racing community. Light Racing is the outreach to youth including school assemblies, community sponsored events and church programs to influence teens with this positive message.
