MOTORSPORT SA DECISION ALTERS FINAL 1998 RALLY POINTS The recent decision by a Motorsport SA appeal court to exclude 1997 champions Jannie Habig and Douglas Judd from the results of last year's Agip Rally in the Western Cape, has caused a bit of a ripple in the final points for the 1998 Stannic Rally Championship. The biggest ripple caused by the decision affects the overall drivers and co-drivers championships, and the Class A8 drivers and co-drivers titles. The decision, however, also had a major affect on the destiny of the drivers championship in Class N1. The appeal court decision to exclude Habig and Judd from the Agip Rally results gave the overall and Class A8 driver and co-driver championships to Castrol Toyota pair Serge Damseaux and Vito Bonafede - by a single point. The controversial turn about gave Damseaux and Bonafdede, who has subsequently retired from rallying, their seventh South African drivers and co-drivers titles. Further down the pecking order the appeal court decision saw another Toyota competitor, Rodney Visagie, sneak the Class N1 drivers title - again by one point - from under the nose of Pretoria youngster Allen Worms. The exclusion of Habig and Judd from the Agip Rally results moved Visagie and co-driver Chris Olsen up a notch in the final standings, with the additional points enough to give Visagie the title ahead of Worms. Missing the Stannic Fleet Management Rally midway through the season also hit Worms. Co-driver Ashley Gericke teamed up with Jackie Watt and earned enough points to keep himself ahead of Visagie's co-driver, Chris Olsen, in the race for the Class N1 co-drivers title. The final standings in the overall drivers championship sees Damseaux finish ahead of Habig, Hergen Fekken, Tjaart van der Walt and Group N champion Hannes Grobler. In the co-drivers champion Bonafede finishes ahead of Judd, Dave Lewkowicz, Cindi Harding and Dave McGregor who dominated Group N along with Grobler. In the overall Group N drivers championship the only change sees Visagie move into eighth place ahead of the unfortunate Worms. Grobler was a comfortable winner of the overall Group N drivers title ahead of Cliff Blackman and Schalk Burger, with McGregor ahead of Johan Klaasen and Thilo von Westernhagen in the co-drivers championship. The appeal court decision had no affect on the outcome of the manufacturers championship where Toyota finally finished more than 300 points ahead of Volkswagen. Final standings gave Toyota 1 071 points and VW 704 points with Nissan a distant third on 324 points.
