Monkhouse storms to best ever finish in Australian Rally Championship.
Sunday, June 5th, 2005: 2005 Coates Rally Queensland -- After showing his formidable pace and consistency in a drama filled opening heat yesterday, South Australian Rally Driver Jack Monkhouse jumped further up the leader board in today's second heat of the Coates Rally of Queensland, finishing a strong sixth outright -- his best ever result in the Australian Rally Championship.
In an impressive show of consistency, Monkhouse set times within the top eight of each stage today -- a 4th fastest time on SS12 (Western 2) proving that a third fastest stage time secured yesterday was no fluke. In addition to scoring his best ever heat finish, Monkhouse also became something of a team leader for Mitsubishi overall today -- becoming the first Lancer runner home in his ex factory Evo VII and ensuring that the marque still scored solid points after a difficult weekend.
The result also gives the South Australian a solid points boost in the GARC privateer's points chase, after a tough opening round left the Cochrane Rallysport Lancer trailing leader Brad Goldsbrough heading into this weekend's round on the tough Queensland Sunshine Coast roads.
"Pretty happy with that," Jack said after the day's competition. "I think it puts us fifth overall for the weekend which is a pretty good result. I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't get top privateer but we didn't quite have the pace to chase down (Privateer winner) Brad Goldsbrough."
After the trials and tribulations endured by many teams in yesterday's drama filled stages, today's second heat was surprisingly trouble free for the Cochrane Rallysport team.
"No real issues from today, we just kept it straight and again made sure we got to the finish. We are still sorting out some handling issues with the car, as it seems to be crab walking a bit here and there, but we are getting faster each time we go out and get more confidence in the car." Monkhouse said.
And with the series having a good long break before the next round of the championship, the 24 year old Adelaidian said that there were a number of key things the team was working on to continue to improve and work their way up the increasingly competitive Globalstar Australian Rally Championship field.
"Basically, set-up, budget and confidence are what we are working on," he said. "Confidence will come with more miles and the more rallies that we do. We really need to work on the set-up -- which will also help our confidence -- and make sure we have enough money to do it all properly."
Jack Monkhouse and the Cochrane Rallysport team's 2005 Campaign is proudly supported by Cochrane Transport, Rays Outdoors, Autosport Adelaide, Exhaust Technology, Jaustech, Phitzner Performance Gearboxes and Velo Seats.
The Globalstar Australian Rally Championship now takes a month off, before heading across Bass Straight to the Apple Isle for the Subaru Safari Rally Tasmania for the 3rd round of the championship on July 15 -- 17.
