Gill trailed Veiby by a narrow margin of 11.9s after the first leg, a gap that could have been easily overturned during Sunday’s six stages which covered a total competitive distance of over 100 km.
But unlike the first round of the series in New Zealand, Veiby was able to extend his advantage right away by topping the first three stages of the day.
After the SS13 was cancelled due to poor weather, Gill fought back and beat Veiby in the final stage.
But the gap to the Norwegian ultimately proved too big to bridge, forcing the 35-year-old to settle for second place.
Veiby, meanwhile, claimed his first APRC victory by a margin of 49.3s, continuing Team MRF’s domination in the intercontinental series.
Unsurprisingly, Mpart’s former WRC driver Jari Ketomaa finished as the closest challenger to the MRF pairing after topping the SS14.
He was followed by teammate Robert Blomberg, with Abhilash PG finishing seventh among all APRC runners in a customer Subaru Impreza.
While both Brad Makovic and Andrew Pennu finished ahead of him in the timesheets, neither of the two Australian drivers are completing the full season.
