Davies soars to Red Dragon success.

Welsh youngster Kevin Davies saved his finest performance of the season for home soil, as he dominated class A5 on the Red Dragon Rally, finishing a magnificent 2nd overall in the Silkolene 1400 section of the rally in the process.

The Llanfihangel-ar-Arth based 20 year old has been the class of the field in A5 so far this season in his Geoff Jones Motorsport run Nissan Micra Kit Car. With Llandysul's Emyr Jones on the notes, Davies has now taken his fourth successive class win, making him a strong favourite for overall A5 title honours this year in the EXL Windows backed machine.

Port Talbot Motor Club's Swansea based rally used the classic South Walian forestry stages better known for their inclusion in Wales Rally GB, Britain's round of the World Rally Championship. With classic tests like Resolven on offer, Kevin was keen to make the most of his 'home' rally in the Silkolene 1400 National Rally Championship. The KJ's Eden Tours backed student didn't disappoint as he immediately took the class lead on the opening stage by the smallest of margins from main A5 rival Marcel Freling.

Despite the appalling weather conditions, it would be the closest that Freling got to Davies and Jones for the remainder of the rally. Davies upped his pace significantly, and pulled away from the chasing A5 pack with fastest time on each stage of the event. It was not all plain sailing for Davies either, as a badly misted up screen in the horrendous wet conditions hampered the Welshman's progress on one stage.

With the problem solved immediately by the GJM team, Davies was able to continue his dominance of the class, and in the process took a well earned 2nd in the Silkolene 1400 overall honours on the event. The result was Kevin's best of the season, and also promoted him to second in the overall Silkolene 1400 Championship, second in the Junior standings, and second in the BTRDA Under 25 driver section as well.

Reflecting on his efforts after a tough day in South Wales, Kevin was delighted with another winners trophy for the A5 class:

'Things couldn't have gone better today' said Kevin. 'Everything went exactly to plan and we pushed very hard in the afternoon stages to make sure that not only did we take the class win, but that we were able to feature highly on the overall results as well. The car was fantastic all day, and we really enjoyed the stages - they were certainly some of the best I have ever driven on. It was quite frustrating spending so much time on the steep uphill climbs, but our commitment was clear to see when we came back down the hill!

It is very pleasing to be doing well in so many different sections of the Championship, but our priority is to keep learning with each event, and hopefully we can take this good form into the next events and try to win the A5 class outright for the year. With four maximum scores from four starts, we currently stand a very good chance of doing this, but you never take anything for granted in motorsport'.
