Dominant Victory in China for Atkinson

Continuing on with his great form Gold Coast driver Chris Atkinson took a dominant victory in the second round of the Chinese National Championship today.

Driving for the GT Tyres Subaru Rally team Atkinson set the pace from the outset of the event to win the event by almost 3 minutes.

It was the second time in as many events with the team that Atkinson and his brother and co-driver Ben has finished on the podium after finishing in third at the opening round of the Championship in March.

Atkinson pushed hard during the opening day of the event aboard the Subaru WRX Sti with a lead of almost two minutes after the opening day. Throughout the weekend he set the fastest stage time in all but three stages of the event, despite "taking it easy" in several stages this afternoon.

"The roads were very tricky being very narrow but very fast and rough," said Atkinson.

"Towards the end of today the brakes started to fade but we were lucky that we had a good buffer over second place and didn't need to push to the limit.

"It is always good to learn new roads and compete in different events, you can never have too much time in a car, or stop learning for that matter."

Although he would have amassed enough points to lead the Championship after the opening two rounds international drivers are unable to earn points towards the Chinese drivers Championship. His success is not going unrewarded however with his points going towards the Team Championship that his GT Tyres team now heads.

Second behind Atkinson in the event was fellow Australian pencer Lowndes.

Atkinson will fly back into Australia on Thursday after spending several days with the team assisting with their driver development program.

The Queenslander will begin the defense of his Asia-Pacific Super 1600 Championship at the Subaru Rally of Canberra on May 7-9.
