CAVALLI DEFENDS HIS CLASSIC TITLE

1998 Classic Adelaide winners, Andrew Cavalli and Michael Dale have leapt into an early lead on the first day of this year's Classic Adelaide Event, taking fastest time on the first five stages .

Driving a highly tuned RS1600 BDA Escort Twin-Cam, Cavalli finished the seven special stages 59 seconds in front of a similar Escort driven by Peter Kyriakidis.

The anticipated competition from Porsche front-runner Rick Bates has been disappointing with Bates suffering from handling problems in his 911.

Bates currently sits in fourth place, equal on the same time as the Holden XU-1 of John Beasley/Rod Stewart.

Classic Adelaide competitors looped North to the Barossa Valley wine region of the Adelaide Ranges led by Australia's triple world F1 champion, Sir Jack Brabham in the "Parade" section in front of the competition cars.

Brabham's performance in his Aston Martin DB4 was noted by competitor Nick Brittan, driving a rare Porsche 904.

"It's great to see Sir Jack having a real go," said Brittan. "Not bad for an old bloke!"

Visiting English driver Win Percy driving a Ford Cobra V8, also emerged with a broad smile, displaying his sideways- style of driving to the spectators during the day.

In the 'Tour' section, Australian legend Norm Beechey was enjoying himself immensely with wife Margaret in their 1962 Chevrolet Impala, sporting a genuine 550 horsepower.

"I'm having a great time," said Norm. "It's better than being in the old men's home!"
