Championship leaders set to do battle in the Czech Republic

The European Rally Championships has now reached Round 8, The 33rd Barum Rally which is based in the Moravian town of Zlin in the Czech Republic, from 29th to 31st August 2003. The battle between joint leaders, Miguel Campos from Portugal and Bruno Thiry from Belgium, is now at a critical stage as both have 920 points with Campos in first place because of more overall victories.

Awaiting them are 309 kms of 20 special stages, 6 being run on Friday, 8 on Saturday and 6 on Sunday. Over 200,000 spectators are expected to watch the rally and the weather forecast for the three days is fine and dry.

"I have zero experience of this rally, although I have driven in the Bohemia Rally before but that was in another part of the country," said Bruno Thiry. "I expect this rally to be a bit like the rally in Poland--.very fast--very technical --and be careful not to puncture. But at the end of the day I want to be in front of my rival Campos."

"It is also my first time in the Czech Republic and I expect it to be a quick rally and very, very difficult," said Miguel Campos. "I will prepare my notes in the same way as I did for Poland and hope for the best."

Evgeny Vasin, the Itera backed Russian driver, will also be hoping to change his string of bad luck and finally get some points against his name.

They will face tough opposition as there are 17 World Rally Cars and 8 other FIA B seeded drivers apart from themselves on the start list. These include Roman Kresta, Vaclav Pech, Leszek Kuzaj, Gabriel Pozzo, Jan Kopecky, Tibor Cserhalmi, Mark Higgins and Martin Knajzl. With Janusz Kulig and Emil Triner also starting, it is indeed a star studded lineup that is gathered in Zlin.

The rally starts and ends in Zlin, which is 300 km east of Prague and it promises to be yet another cliff hanger with the result in the balance until the final stages.
