Focus moves north.
Cork, 4th July 2003:The fourth round of Ireland premier one make rally championship, the 2003 Ford Ireland Focus Rally Championship will take place at the Sligo Stages Rally based in Sligo town on the 13th of July next.
The first three rounds of the series have seen no fewer than three different winners and numerous lead changes throughout each event. The closely fought battles have been an inspiration to all the crews as no one has a distinct advantage at this early stage.
Oliver Stanley (Durrow) in the Perry Motors Ford Focus currently leads the series on 79 points having recorded his first victory of the season on the last round in Kilkenny, however Oliver will be under pressure as the series moves away from his home soil. Second placed Gerry Keyes (Limerick) on 64 points in the O'Dwyer Steel/P J Matthews Ford Focus has had a slow but progressive start to his season recording respectively a 3rd and 2-nd place finish on the last two events. Third placed John Foley (Cork) in the ASA Marketing Ford Focus is currently at the height of his powers but was sidelined on the last round due to a minor mechanical problem. On current form John should be the man to beat as the crews move into unknown territory.
Further down the field is the 2002 Ford Ireland Focus Rally Champion Colm Murphy (Athea) despite winning the opening round of the series in devastating style he has failed to finish the last two rounds due to accidents. If he can keep it together and make the finish then he will be a force to be reckoned with.
With thirty points on offer to the victor of each round the outcome of this closely fought seven round series is far from decided.
