2002 Ford Ireland Focus Rally Championship

Focus bandwagon rolls on to Cork.

CORK, 27TH September 2002: The penultimate round of Irelands premier one make rally championship, the Ford Ireland Focus Rally Championship, will take place at the Murphy Construction Cork "20" International Rally, based in Cork City on the 5th & 6th of October next.

The 2002 Ford Ireland Focus Rally Championship contenders really proved the "metal" of the new Ford 2.0 litre Focus Championship Rally Cars, as the winner of the last round of the Championship, Colm Murphy (Athea, Co. Limerick) not only dominating Class 7 but ran as high as sixteenth overall before a slight "off" dropped him to nineteenth overall after 85 competitive stage miles.

The Murphy Construction Cork "20" International Rally will also see newcomer David Delaney (Cashel) join the ranks of this highly competitive series that has seen some hair raising battles between Oliver Stanley (Durrow), Cathal O'Reilly (Cavan) and Colm Murphy (Limerick), winners respectively of each of the last three rounds of the 2002 Ford Ireland Focus Rally Championship.

With a starting line up of nine identical Pirelli shod Ford Focus Championship Rally Cars and as the Cork"20" International Rally is historically a very tough event both spectators and competitors alike are guaranteed some of the closest competition witnessed this year on Irish soil. The Cork "20" International Rally could be the deciding event on the outcome of the Championship victor, as Hamilton Bell (Hillsborough) currently leads on 57 points. However Colm Murphy, Oliver Stanley and Cathal O'Reilly all are in joint second position on 56 points. With thirty points on offer to the victor of each round, a good result in Cork is vital to their Championship hopes.

"The closeness of the competition is a testament to the Ford Focus, the equality of the Championship and the driving ability of each crew. The Championship points table is still extremely close and it is still anyone's race to become the inaugural Ford Ireland Focus Rally Champion" said Declan Foley, Ford Focus Brand Manager, Ford Ireland.
