4th Round of the ATV Powersport ITP National Off-road Championship for Motorcycles & the 5th round for Quads
DICK AND BADENHORST RULED FIRST EVER J'BAY CLASSIC 400 OFF-ROAD
Gray Dick (Shimwells Yamaha/Panasonic Car Audio) and Brendan Badenhorst (ATV Powersport ITP Lonestar 450) dominated the first ever J'Bay Classic 400 when they started the motorbike and quad categories respectively in pole positions and walked away as the winners after the 400km race in the Jeffreys Bay area.
And while it was Dick's first victory of the season, it was the fourth time Badenhorst won the overall quad category. Cornel de Villiers (Bombardier Speed Quad) started just nine seconds behind Badenhorst and was planning to chase him, but experienced electrical problems not even 100m after the start and lost 12 minutes. He eventually finished in second place with Tiaan Reynecke (EMD Racing Yamaha Raptor) third overall after a crash early in the race caused severe damage to his quad's wheel-allignment.
Dick had to fight off a determined Spencer Kriel (Alfie Cox Adventures KTM) who started 36 seconds behind him and finished second overall while he also won the 250cc Class. Dick and his team-mate, Clayton Enslin (EPH Shimwells Yamaha) experienced a crash together, but luckily both made it to the finish. Enslin finished on the overall podium again when he claimed third place.
The young Louwrens Mahoney (KTM SA Racing) ran out of fuel during the time- trail and was the 33rd rider to tackle the race, but he raced brilliantly to finish fourth overall and third in the 250cc Class. He was followed home by Riaan van Niekerk (KTM SA Racing) who enjoyed the technical race and won the 200cc Class. His closest rival, Gavin Louw (Shimwells Yamaha) crashed quite badly, but still managed to finish second in the class and 13th overall.
The current champion, Darryl Curtis (KTM SA Racing) lost some time in the pits with front brake problems, but raced safely to finish second in the Open Class (Dick won this class) and sixth overall. Geoffrey Wolhuter (Sadiba Russell Campbell Kawasaki) tackled the main race with a used rear tyre and had to preserve it to the end. He was the seventh rider home and was followed by his new team-mate from Port Elizabeth, Juan "Bollie" van Rooyen, who swopped his VOR for a 125cc Kawasaki. He won this class ahead of Kenneth Gilbert (EPH Shimwells Yamaha/Wasa Racing) who was 15th overall. Bernard Johnstone and his Ramco Suzuki team-mate, Hylton Smith, rounded off the top ten.
In the national quad category, the positions in the top ten changed all the time and Jacques "Boesman" Struwig (Southern ATV 450) moved into the second position early in the race. Fading rear brakes and flat tyres costed him valuable time and he finished fourth overall. Kiri Oberholzer (Polaris SA Racing Predator) was Mr. Consistency again and finished in the fifth place without experiencing any serious trouble.
The current Senior Champion, Hennie Michau (Bombardier), won this class for the first time this season and was the sixth quad rider home after two flat tyres slowed his pace somewhat during the race. Chris Jarvis (Wilrogate Yamaha YFZ450) was seventh overall followed by Carl Wichmann (Bombardier Speed Quad) who started in 47th position after he had a coming together with another quad rider and damaged his four-wheeler. A fuel pipe that kept coming loose during time-trail saw Dallie Terblanche (ATV Powersport Banshee) starting towards the back of the field and although he made up places during the main race, he ran out of fuel and lost some time again. He still managed to finish ninth overall with AB Opperman (Polaris Predator) tenth.
The defending champion, Hendrik Potgieter (Bombardier Speed Quad) was fourth on the starting grid, but a crash and two flat tyres saw him finishing in the 11th place overall. Karel Swart (Gas Gas) won the Sportsmans Class while Emden Els (ATV Powersport Lonestar 450) won the 30 Plus Class. Milton Thesen (Yamaha Raptor) won the Master Quad Class and Landi Jourdan was the first lady home on a quad.
In the motorcycle category, Brian Bontekoning (KTM SA Racing) won the Senior Pro Class for the fourth consecutive time while Ian van der Walt won the Master Class.
The next event on the calendar is the Hluhluwe Queen Pineapple Off-road Spectacular from 1-2 July.
