The Lichtenburg 400, the penultimate round of the Bankfin Off-Road Championship scheduled for November 1 and 2, has been cancelled.

The Motorsport South Africa Off-Road Car Racing Commission announced today that the organisers, the Lichtenburg Motorklub, had decided against organising the event due to a noon deadline today for finalisation of sponsorship for the event not being met.

The full complement of eight rounds in the series will be met, however, with the reinstatement of the Tarka 400 in the Eastern Cape.

The Tarka 400 will be organised by the Settlers Off-Road Club with sponsorship from one of the businesses operated by Queenstown businessman and former South African off road champion Greg Harvey. "The Tarka 400 has always been well organised, offers a challenging route and means more provincial representation on this year's calendar," said Harvey.

"The event also means a great deal to the region financially, and we are delighted the Commission has accepted our offer to step into the breach."

Commission president Piet Swanepoel added it was important that the Bankfin Off Road Championship be decided over the full complement of eight rounds. "We also recognise the importance of additional provincial representation in the championship, and have been working on a plan to incorporate a Western Cape event in 2003.

"The Commission and competitors owe Harvey and the Settlers Off Road Club a vote of thanks for agreeing, at short notice, to take over responsibility for the event."

Harvey said the event format was likely to include a prologue in Queenstown with the race route centred on the Tarkastad area. The designated service point will be at the Tarkastad showgrounds with the route likely to be made up of three 120 kilometre laps.
