ABSA OFF ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP

CHALLENGING ROUTE FOR RFS MAGALIES 400

Competitors will face a challenging route on this weekend's RFS Magalies 400, the final round of the Absa Off Road Championship, with a number of South African titles to be settled.

The organisers, however, faced a major challenge in mapping out the route. The RFS Magalies 400 is a new event on the Absa off road calendar and is being run in an area new to the off road community, and early rains further complicated matters for the route directors.

"A huge amount of work has gone into a route that offers competitors a variety of challenges," said route director Andre Strauss. "This is the first time a national event has been run in the Magaliesberg area and we were flying by the seat of our pants.

Strauss added that a huge vote of thanks was due to property owners in the area. "They have bent over backwards to help us," said Strauss, "And we could not have done it without their co-operation."

"What we have come up with is a route that offers plenty of variety ranging from flat and fast maize fields through to rocky outcrops, Kallies Quarry and a few water splashes which could cause problems if the good rains continue making the route very slippery and muddy."

The race will be run over a 160 kilometre loop which will be completed twice. The pre race prologue to determine start positions will be run over 90 kilometres with the first 45 kilometres the same as the opening 45 kilometres of the race proper.

Strauss added that care had also been taken to make the event spectator friendly. A total of 10 spectator points make for easy and varied spectating.

Spectator points 1, 2, 3 and 9 and 10 are situated approximately 20 kilometres from Tarlton on the Randfontein road just off the Magalies R24. These offer good all day spectating with competitors passing through the area twice.

Kallies Quarry, which is spectator point 1 and 10, is certain to produce some good action while spectators can see the true speed and handling of sophisticated off road vehicles at spectator points 4, and 7 and 8 on the R500 Carletonville/Vlakfontein road which can be approached from the N14 Ventersdorp road or the Magalies/Koster R509.
