This time we make a break from the regular Middle-East Rally Championship (MERC) reports and take a look on one of the best Middle-east rally drivers.
You all know Muhamed Bin-Sulayem, the 12th time Middle-east champion, heard about Jean Pierre Nasralla and Abdullah Bakhashab but this time "rally-net" take a good look on one of the rising stars of the world rally. Hamed Al-Wahaibi was born in January 1968 in Oman.
In 1997 he formed the "Arab World Rally Team". The team manager is Poul Howarth and the marketing director is Dorian Burrows. They started to rally in the Middle-East Rally Championship, and on their first attempt won the Group-N title, after winning the UAE, JORDAN, QATAR and DUBAI rallies in Group-N class.
Their immediete success in 1997 MERC drove the "Arab World Rally Team" to move in 1998 to the World Rally Championship (WRC). Hamed Al-Wahaibi took part in 5 rallies - Portugal, Argentina, Greece, New Zealand and RAC. The team finished the season 5th in Group-N. In 1999 Hamed Al-Wahaibi again took part in the WRC, winning 3 times the Group-N - Safari, Catalunya and Acropolis, 2nd place in New Zealand and 3rd in Corsica - finishing 2nd overall in the Group-N championship.
The big change for Hamed Al-Wahaibi came in 2000, he switched to Subaru Impreza turbo WRC and as a member of the Subaru All-Star team. He took part in the FIA teams cup, winning the the rallies of New Zealand, Corsica and RAC.
For 2001 Hamed Al-Wahaibi competed again in the FIA teams cup last week, as part of his preparations for the Cyprus Rally. Hamed Al-Wahaibi took part in the 2nd round of the French Gravel Rally Championship, in the Rallye Terre D'Auvergene, taking the lead in the first day against Yevs Loubet, holding it all the second day to win the rally.
