Miguel Campos and Peugeot win in the downpour at Lafões

The last race in the National Rally championship, held this weekend in the Beira region, near Lafões, was totally dominated by the duo Miguel Campos/Nuno Rodrigues da Silva, the official drivers for the Peugeot Total Silver Team SG, who won 5 classification races. Campos ended with a comfortable advantage of 32.9s over Armindo Araújo, moving up to second place in the drivers championship. Meanwhile the duo Rui Madeira/Mário Castro was involved in a fight for third position during the whole race, ending in fifth.

The rain which fell all day in the area of Oliveira de Frades and S. Pedro do Sul was a major factor for this asphalt track, but it did not stop Miguel Campos, even with a machine with two wheel drive, from notching up the 12th win in his career in the National Rallies and the 36th triumph for Peugeot in the Portuguese championship.

Miguel Campos: "It was a difficult day due to the inconstant weather which made our task very complicated, especially on the second time through the stretches, which had got very muddy on the curves, requiring great care and extra attention. On the first stretch today I managed to get into the lead and was winning the specials, which made it possible for me to manage the advantage and take less risks in the last specials where the ground was more slippery. I am very happy for giving Peugeot another win, and for them providing me with an impeccable 206 Super 1600. This victory belongs to everyone who works on the team, I just have one part of the job of winning it."

Rui Madeira: "This race was a real lottery due to the rain. We had been fighting for third place all day, but one two occasions we lost a lot of time with impressive downpours which forced me to slow down, due to the aqua-planing. I was also getting used to the Peugeot 206 Super 1600 on a wet surface, but very carefully as the specials were very dirty and slippery. My mission is get points for Peugeot, and that was what I was concerned with."

Carlos Barros (Sports Director): "We had an excellent rally in spite of the rain which fell all day and the surface conditions which were more favourable to the cars with four-wheel drive. Miguel moved up to second place in the National Championship, and Rui had to adapt the car to the rain but did a good job. In the Manufacturer's Championship we are continuing to reduce the difference to first place and we are already down to seconds. In the second consecutive win this year, the two Peugeot 206 Super 1600s reached the end of the race without problems and made us very happy with the overall result of the Peugeot Total Silver Team SG's performance."
