MINI ROOF ROUTE WILL SUIT OFF-ROAD QUAD COMPETITORS

The Mini Roof, the third round of the ATV Powersport ITP national off-road championship for quads and the only race on the off-road calendar exclusively for quads, will once again take place on April 1-2, 2005, in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.

This race was introduced in 2003 and did not take place last year, but after its initial success, the race organisers, LORA (Lesotho Off-road Association) went out of their way to reinstate the Mini Roof on the calendar and hope that more than 100 quads will enter for this quad-only event in Lesotho.

The route will be very different from the real Roof of Africa and will consist out of two loops - the first will be 67,5km and the second 84,2km while the time-trail will consist of 41,6km. The 2005 Mini Roof will take the competitors out Lancer's Gap way to the east of Maseru with the designated service point (DSP) at Sefikeng, only 36km from Maseru.

On Friday, April 1, the time-trail will start at Lancer's Gap and certain sections might be familiar to competitors who participated in the 2004 Roof of Africa. The time-trail will determine the starting order and times for the main event on Saturday, April 2, where the first rider will tackle the 67,5km loop at 07h00. This loop will take the riders through the Tebetebeng River Valley and the Valley of a Thousand Rivers, an area that will be quite familiar to the more veteran riders. Competitors have not raced through the Valley of a Thousand rivers since the Mini Roof in 2003.

After refueling at the DSP, the riders will then leave for the 84,2km loop that will take them to the Bethany area and up through certain sections of the time-trail route, but only in reverse this time. They will travel over the Berea Plateau, an area known for a meteorite that showered a 7,4kmx1,9km area of the most western part of the plateau with rocks that weighed between 2g and 2,4kg on July 21, 2002. Apparently the noise lasted for 15 seconds and could be heard over a 100km radius!
