A spectator friendly route and a new innovation from the organisers will provide off-road enthusiasts with plenty of opportunity to take in the action on the Moreca Ford Caledon 400 to be run in the Dewetsdorp area on September 20 and 21.

The event is the penultimate round of the MSA Off Road Championship and is open to cars, motorcycles and quad racers. With championships up for grabs in all three categories, the racing is likely to be hectic, and this will add to the spectacle for off-road enthusiasts.

The Caledon 400 Off-Road Club, organizers of the event, have come up with a route that will enable spectators from Bloemfontein and surrounding towns - along with enthusiasts from other areas - to take in the action along the main Bloemfontein to Wepener tar road. "There are numerous points between Bloemfontein and Wepener where spectators can pick up the action," said club spokesman Vivian Maclachlan.

"We deliberately set out to make the route user friendly for competitors, service crews and spectators."

On this score the organisers have also taken a leaf out of the American off-road racing book. In addition to the main service point at the Dewetsdorp Showgrounds, there will be six other service points along the route.

The additional service points will allow technical crew to at regular intervals sort out any mechanical problems encountered by competitors. The additional service points will also provide spectators with an opportunity to get a close up look at cars, motorcycles and quads taking part on the Moreca Ford Caledon 400.

Enthusiasts will also have plenty of opportunity to meet crews and look at some highly interesting machinery - particularly in the Class T Supertruck category - prior to the event. Cars, motorcycles and quad racers will all be on display at the Loch Logan waterfront in Bloemfontein from 14h00 to 20h00 on September 19.

The 41 kilometre Friday time trial to determine start positions will get underway at 09h30. The first vehicle away at the start of the second racing section on September 20, will come under starters orders at 07h00.

The Special Vehicle and Production Vehicle entrants will lead the field at the start, with the first motorcycles/quads starting at 08h30. Racing section two will see competitors tackle a 455 kilometre route that will bring the best out of both men and machinery.

"The route is varied and interesting," said Maclachlan. "It will provide a fair challenge for all the competitors, and we are looking forward to some highly competitive racing."
