NEW CONCEPT CAR FOR ALBERTS

Class A contenders Nardus Alberts and Collin Hunter will open a few eyes with a new concept car when the Absa Off Road championship season gets underway with the Nissan Dealer 400 in the Western Cape on March 17 and 18.

Alberts and Hunter will be out in a new BAT Spec 2 car that will run in the Special Vehicle category with backing from Centurion based pharmaceutical company WRAPSA. Powered by a LS2 510 hp V8 with a four-speed Fortin gearbox, the new BAT features a mid-mounted engine as opposed to the traditional rear mounted power unit.

"It was during a weak moment last year that I decided on building the new car," said Alberts. "I think the mid-mounted engine will have advantages, and with around 500 horsepower to play with the car is going to be quick.

"My brother Paul and friends Hannes van Zyl and Gee van den Eede will again make up the service crew, and hopefully we will have great fun and also come up with good results."

When he wasn't racing, Alberts, a keen golfer and scuba diver, also found time last year to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Snow ski-ing is another Alberts passion, which he enjoys with his three children who, coincidentally he says, were all born on the same day of the same month.

Co-driver Hunter's hobbies are a little more conventional. He enjoys flying model aeroplanes and playing tennis, but the pair worked well together last season and could spring a few surprises this year.

"I have been racing since 1988 and there have been times I have wanted to pack it in for good," said Alberts. "Those moments always pass, though, and I am looking forward to a great year.

"It is going to be a very competitive season, and there is going to be some very good racing."
