Marc Racine takes the championship lead following Rallye Saguenay
June 20, 2004 -- It's this weekend that Rallye Saguenay was launched for the first time ever. This event was the third round of the Quebec Rally Cup Motul, presented by DMS. A lot of action occured at this event and Marc Racine, along with co-driver Pascal Gadbois, both from Rawdon, grasped the chance to climb up the chart to become the new leader of the Quebec Rally Cup abord his Honda Civic.
Regarding overall standing at this event, it's the duet of Philippe Dube/B.Gilles Lacroix (Subaru Impreza WRX) who wins it all with a 49 secondes gap on Racine/Gadbois. However, using a 4 wheel-drive car, Dube and Lacroix are not eligible to cumulate points in the Quebec Rally Cup. For the second consecutive event, it is Racine who scores the winner points. Another success for the young driver, bringing him up to the first rank in this championship, half way to the end of the season.
From the first special stage, two of the favorites has to resume their race: Mathieu L'Estage (VW Golf) following a roll and Yohan Tessier (VW Golf) with a fuel pump problem. The battle for the first position was then between Racine, the 2003 champion David Legault (Ford Escort) and Eric Lapointe (Honda Civic). After a breathtaking performance in the third stage, Lapointe was leading the pack moments before his has to retire with a mechanical problem.
Only a few second behind Legault, Racine out a lot of effort in the second part of the race to take the lead. He finally crossed the finish line with a 17 secondes advantage on David Legault. Sylvain St-Pierre, from Gaspesia (Nissan NX2000), is third, in front of Frederic Moisan who wins the Production 3 Class with is VW Golf. Nicolas Godard (Honda Civic) takes the win of the P2 Class.
At the end of the day, only 12 of the 23 participating teams had crossed the finish line of Rallye Saguenay and, in spite of very tough and tricky roads, teams really enjoy competing at the first edition. The next round of the Quebec Rally Cup Motul, presented by DMS, will take place in two weeks in Gaspesia region at the very popular Baie-des-Chaleur's Rallye Auto Nord-Americain (July 2 & 3). It's a rendez-vous!
