The destructive storms that lashed the central North island during the last weekend will have little effect on Rally New Zealand, this country's round of the FIA World Rally Championship.

The event travels over some back country roads in the west Waikato region between Otorohanga and Raglan on Monday July 17, but most southerly location will be a service park in the Otorohanga township.

"Several roads on our route were closed over the weekend, but these areas are being repaired by the local authorities and will remain part of the event," said Clerk of the Course, Graeme Robertson.

Previous Rally New Zealand events have been effected by adverse weather and road slips, but did not greatly effect the overall running of the events.

"Several years ago we had severe slips on actual special stages in the Bay of Plenty and on the famous Motu stage which forced cancellation, but we had the experience to quickly re-route the rally with minimal disruption," he said.

Local authority engineerd and the rally organisation are in regular contact, but the storms have struck well in advance of the rally date and should have little effect.

"We don't need any contingency plans at thi stage, but if adverse weather strikes again closer to the rally we will formulate solutions as required," he said.

Rallly New Zealand starts at Manukau City Friday July 24, uses the Maramarua Forest on Saturday, the back country roads around Maungaturoto on Sunday and the west Waikato region on Monday.
