TEAMS FACE ANOTHER TIGHT ABSA OFF ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP
The off road racing fraternity is gearing up for another nail biting finish to title issues in both the Production and Special Vehicle categories when this year's Absa Off Road Championship gets underway in the Western Cape on March 20 and 21.
The Western Cape 400, organised by the CAPE PENINSULA Motorcycle and Car Club (CPMCC), will again be run in the Darling area. The event will see the first salvoes fired in what are likely to be wars of attrition in both the Production and Special Vehicle categories.
In recent years both the overall and various class championships have gone all the way to the wire. Last season the overall titles in both the Production and Special Vehicle categories were decided at the last event of the year.
"All the signs are there that it won't be any different this time around," said Motorsport SA Off Road Car Racing Commission president Richard Schilling. "Our domestic series is one of the most competitive championships of its kind in world motorsport.
"The domination of the top five positions on the Dakar Rally by crews and teams with strong connections to the Absa Off Road Championship is proof of this." Schilling added that in both the Production and Special Vehicle categories steady growth in the premier Class SP and Class A championships, were indicative of the healthy state of South African off road racing. It is expected that up to 21 vehicles will compete in the SP Class this season with similar numbers in Class A.
"In both championships there are half a dozen or more potential race winners," added Schilling. "That is a healthy state of affairs and is going to lead to close racing throughout the season."
Western Cape 400 chief organiser Bill Bright said preparations for the March 20 and 21 event were well underway. He added that competitors could look forward to another tough opening to the season.
"In previous seasons we have come up with tough but fair routes," Bright said. "This year won't be any different and crews will have to work for their results. The route will again incorporate a little bit of everything and we are looking at incorporating some sections that are new to the event."
