Michael Barrable and Kenny McKinstry are swopping seconds on every stage, on what is shaping up to be a memorable battle on this Fastnet Rally. As can be seen above, just 3s separate the two Subarus at this halfway halt. Barrable said "Everything is going well, but I'm a bit concerned about the turbo. Melvyn Evans behind tells me that there is a lot of smoke and oil coming out of the exhaust at stage starts". McKinstry said "Just getting going fine now, settling down with co driver Sean - It's a while since he's read notes to me. I keep feeling I could do with a different tyre, but the trouble is a tyre that's'good for half the stage isn't'good for the other half"." An interesting twist to the situation at the front is that there is a possible jump start penalty hanging over Barrable, who was sharp off the mark at the start of stage 3. Third placed Melvyn Evans has sort of settled for his position at the minute, the Welshman saying that his Escort WRC's anti lag system is not as sharp as it should be. Melvyn is now thinking very much about Get Connected series points. Patrick Elliott has speeded up over the last few stages to hold 4th, the Cavan man finding out that his tyre pressures were all a bit awry. Ollie O'Donovan in 5th had some spark plug problems over the Goats Path stage.
Ollie is using an engine borrowed from McKinstry, and definitely does not want to damage it. Any repeat of those spark plug problems and Ollie will pull out of the rally. Liam McCarthy's Corolla suffered a little bit of a misfire on stage 4 which has taken the edge of his times. Frank O'Mahony is well off the pace, Frank reckons it will be about Wednesday before he gets used to the car, a a prop shaft vibration not helping his cause. Denis Cronin is speeding up now that the roads are drying. Phil Collins is 2nd 2 wheel drive car on 31.30. Kieran O'Neill 3rd on 31.36. Kieran's Kadett needing a new set of tyres. The Belfast man joked "As soon as I buy new rubber something goes wrong!"
Bob Fowden continues to lead gpN convincingly, and that was despite nearly putting his Lancer into a huge gully in stage 4 at a heavily cautioned square left over double jump. Stuart Darcy was close to Fowden's times through stages 3 and 4 but a stage 1 puncture did the young Killybegs man no favours. Damien Cole reported early turbo problems and we have seen no sign of his gpN Lancer here at service "in". Kieran Molloy is well off the gpN pace, admitting his Lancer is neither braking or handling properly.
Looking further afield - Shaun Gallagher continues to lead the Peugeot 206 Super Cup section of the Tempest Rally, with Ballinamallard's Garry'Jennings on course to take the title if he maintains his 3rd place. Gareth McHale was 4th Peugeot earlier but we hear he may have had a problem in stage 12 - more news to follow.
