Queenstown businessman Greg Harvey will have a few fingers in different pies on the Queen Motor Spares Tarka 400, the penultimate round of the Bankfin Off-Road Championship, on November 1 and 2.
Through Queen Motor Spares the Eastern Cape veteran not only provides backing for the event -- which replaces the cancelled Lichtenburg 400 on the off-road calendar -- but he and co-driver Boy Stone will be hoping to virtually wrap up the overall Special Vehicle and Class A championships on home turf. Harvey and Stone, in the Castrol Queen Motor Spares Jimco, have a 100 percent finish record this season, and have been leading contenders for both championships throughout the season.
Harvey is on track for his third Special Vehicle drivers championship with long time co-driver Stone in line for his second co-drivers title. Harvey won the Special vehicle drivers championships in 1995 and in 1998, with Stone winning the co-drivers title in 1998.
"The ruling where all competitors have to drop one score is still a factor for us, but a good result on home territory should do the trick for us," said Harvey. "We have had a string of good results and consistency has been a plus factor, but a win has somehow eluded us.
"It would be great for Boy and I if we could end the drought on an event which is close to our hearts."
When the Lichtenburg event was cancelled Harvey and the Settlers Off-Road Club were quick to step into the breach. "We were very disappointed when the Tarka 400 lost its national status," said Harvey.
"The event means a great deal to the Tarkastad region, and has always been well organised. When the Lichtenburg race ran into trouble we were only too happy to take on the event at short notice. It is important that the national championship, sponsored by Bankfin, the specialist vehicle finance division of ABSA Bank, is represented in as many provinces as is possible, and hopefully we will be back on the national calendar next season.
"In the meantime Boy and I have a race and a couple of championships to win, so we are looking forward to putting on a good show in front of our home crowds."
