SKELTA DAMAGED AT TARGA TASMANIA

While not detracting from the disappointment suffered by the Skelta G-Force sports car team following their dramatic exit from yesterday's final stages of Targa Tasmania, while running in second place, owner/driver Ray Vandersee has declared the damage suffered by the car was far less dramatic than first reported.

Late last night Vandersee relayed that the supposed broken rear axle was nothing more than shear bad luck, caused during the earlier stages of the fifth and final leg of the International rally.

About halfway through the last major stage on Mt Arrowsmith we detected a noise coming from the rear of the Skelta but this didn't effect our run on the stage, however it did leave us a little concerned," said Vandersee.

By the end of the stage, we noticed a roughness in drive and assumed it may be a rear wheel bearing or the CV joint.

Unfortunately our service crew were stuck in Queenstown so we continued on and just hoped everything would be ok.

"Fifty kilometres into the touring stage we lost drive to the back wheel and straight away knew what it was. So we went about trying to prepare the car for when our crew arrived hoping we could resume.

"Unfortunately when we took a closer look it was the rubber boot that holds the grease into the CV joint that had been damaged by a rock and the loss of grease allowed the joint to run dry, totally destroying itself and stripping the end off the axle.

"At the end of the day it was nothing more than bad luck and I suppose it's comforting knowing that if we hadn't lost the grease we wouldn't have lost the axle."
