As if a 7.0-litre Monaro wasn't enough, even more exotic cars and drivers continue to feature in speculation about the final Bathurst 24-Hour entry list. Columnist PAUL COCKBURN reckons even the curiously-named Mosler pales to insignificance beside rumour that Nicholas Cage will have his father-in-law Elvis as co-driver.
THE Noises Distant rise. Something about "Bathurst" and "24 hours" appearing in the same sentence seems to have caused arousal O/S and I'll ask you to bear with me here while I attend to correspondence:
ATT: JOHN BOWE
Dear John,
I recall, and vividly, your 'disappointment' ref the domestic competition awaiting your Ferrari in the upcoming Bathurst day/night fixture. The Mother Gun Monaro's significant deviation from shopping-car spec being particularly upsetting.
Well, John, electric photographs are to hand of what dem furriners are contemplating for the event and are you sitting down....?
God only knows what a Mosler is and maybe it's being a GTO will appeal to the Ferrarista at PHR Scuderia, but it's been awhile since anything like that presented itself to the RTA as daywear. Of course, owner Martin Short may just have sent the pictures over for PROCAR's Brian Lawrence to add to his collection, but somehow I think the rumour bush might be fruiting here.
Best of the rest in the recent rumour department were Mick Doohan in a stove-hot Something and all the Brabhams, pere et fils, that fit being stuffed into a Honda liveried in the denim pattern of the Levis-sponsored 1976 Moss/Brabham Bathurst car. The campaign cry: "It's all in the genes."
Far less convincing was Nicholas Cage in a Lamborghini but that didn't stop the some people from claiming hand on heart that it's all true and you can add father-in-law Elvis as co-driver if it helps the story.
Further towards weird was the rumoured RISI Competizione entry from Houston, Texas, of two 360 Ferraris with the first all-black team of drivers. Good of 'em to point it out. And then there's the one about Paul Newman. As if. Then again....
All of which hints, one way or another, at the most diverse field ever to grace Bathurst. And that the entry list is fairly certain to be published as a loose-leaf attachment to the program.
Australia's first major international 24-hour race, the Bathurst 24-Hour will start at 4 pm on Saturday 16 November. Practice and qualifying, including night sessions, will be on Friday. Support events will be a two-hour Showroom Showdown for GT Production Cars on Saturday, and races on Friday and Saturday for V8 BRutes and Holden HQ sedans.
