DANVILLE, VA., APRIL 29. Peter Sachs and Tom Hollfelder were the winners in the second round of the 2001 Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge, held at Virginia International Raceway. Sachs was the overall winner in both races for the earlier drum brake cars, while Holfelder took both disc brake races.
Sachs and Peter Giddings (Alfa Romeo 8C/35) repeated exchanged the lead in both races for the drum cars, , but the superior power and handling of Sachs' 1957 335 Sport prevailed over the Alfa, once raced by Tazio Nuvolari. In both races the finishing order behind Sachs and Giddings was Ed Davies (375 MM Pf Spyder) in third, Tony Wang (Maserati 300S) fourth, and Brian Kenner (166 F2) in fifth. Sachs, Davies, and Giddings were class winners. Tom Hollfelder brought his Maserati 450S, which was fast in practice but suffered mecanical problems in the warmup, and failed to start either race. Other non-starters included Leslie Davies (250 TdF) and Lawrence Stroll (250 TR), each with minor mechanical problems.
Ed Davies had started his 512M on pole for the first Disc Brake race, with Hollfelder alongside. Davies led much of the first race until a ring gear failure left him a non-finisher. Todd Morici won the BB/LM class in the first race, ahead of a tight battle among Rich Liebhaber, Ray Hartmann, Lawrence Stroll, Paul Facella, and Neil Fairman. Hollfelder easily took the overall win in his 512 F (ex-Filipinett) after Davies' DNF. Other class winners in the first Disc race included John Giordano (365 GTB/4), Tony Wang (250P), Bill Noon (308 GT/M), and Allie Ash (250 SWB/Comp 61).
Hollfelder easily won the second Disc race over Todd Morici, but several battles further backed highlighted the race. Noon and Giordano were never more than a length apart for the entire race, and Rich Liebhaber stayed on Morici's tail for the entire distance as well. The outstanding run, though, was by Chuck Wegner, driving his newly acquired 512S for the first time. He had moved into second overall from his fifth starting place when he went off course at Turn One, allowing several cars by. Wegner set fastest lap of the race, a full second faster than Davies' record-setting pole time. Wegner's record lap was the first of the weekend to exceed the 100 MPH mark. Class winners were Hollfelder, Morici Noon, Giordano, Charlie Arnott (250 LM) and Ash.
Next race for the North American Shell Historic Ferrari Challenge will be in two weeks, at the Road Atlanta track.
