The big winners at the 2003 Sommet des Legendes
Mont-Tremblant, July 6, 2003 - The 2003 edition of the Circuit Mont-Tremblant Sommet des Legendes was an undeniable success. The weather was clear and the drivers, in cars dating from the 1930s to the 1980s, gave the thousands of spectators something to remember.
The Celebrity Race
Sunday's races opened with the Celebrity Race, which attracted quite a crowd. Patrice Brisebois of the Canadiens finished first, followed by Howard Starr, president of Tommy Hilfiger International; Jasey Jay Anderson, world champion snowboarder; Melanie Turgeon, world champion Alpine skier; Murray Smith, president of the Sommet des Legendes and a motor racing specialist; Catriona Le May Doan, world champion speed skater; and finally, Tailor James, a playmate who was brave enough to challenge these Olympic champions.
In the Pre-War Cars class, Ian Landy at the wheel of his Era R6B finished first with a time of 2:08.533, followed by Peter Giddings (2:10.272 - Alfa Romeo Monza 1932) and Jeff Jacobson (2:18.31 - Morgan Trike Aero 1931). Jacobson commented, "It's fantastic driving this car on the Circuit Mont-Tremblant track. Towards the end of the race, I felt a part fall on my foot but I just kept on driving. You figure as long as it's running, you don't have to stop these machines. Luckily, it was just the oil cap. Every race in these cars from the 30s has a few surprises."
In the 50s Sports Racers class, Richard Freyberger finished first at the wheel of his Lotus 1958 XI with a time of 1:58.874, ahead of John Harden (1:58.050 - Lester Chevy Knobbly on 1958). Freyberger has been amateur racing driver since 1959 and has taken several championships in his Lotus.
F1Historic Grand Prix. Duncan Dayton in his Ford Cosworth 79 (Dayton) and Rick Knoop in his Tyrrell 009-1 took this one.
Dayton also won the Formula Classic, his second victory of the weekend, this time in his Ford Cosworth FVA, with Roy Walzer and Joe Blacker a close second and third. Shairon Beale, one of 5 women drivers registered in the Sommet, is a big fan of the Tremblant track: "It's such a fast track that you just want to keep accelerating, until your reason takes over. It's a very exciting race. When you're a woman in an environment dominated by men, you get some reactions, mostly positive but a few people don't think that women belong in racing. That's their problem. This is my passion and it's here to stay." This is Shairon's second season at the Sommet des Legendes.
In short, it was a terrific weekend, with glorious weather and plenty of action. And we can look forward to more of same until September.
