Golinello Gets a Little Help from his Friends at Autobahn
JOLIET, Il.--Richard Golinello raced the ninth round of the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Series at Autobahn Country Club on Sunday, and he did it with help from his competitors.
Sunday's Autobahn Grand Prix was nearly over before it began for Golinello. As he turned onto the front straight after the initial sighting lap, he noticed that the left front of the No. 50 R&C Motorsports Ford Mustang felt odd.
Golinello thought it might be a flat tire, so he went to the pits while the rest of the field lined up on the starting grid. The tire was fine, but the left front suspension was broken: the spindle had sheared off. Golinello assumed he would have to retire from the race before it even started.
Instead, members of three other teams came over to help fix the broken suspension. Capaldi Racing owner Leo Capaldi, as well as crewmembers from RPM Motorsports and Speedworks all lent a hand.
The suspension on the No. 50 Mustang was repaired and Golinello joined the race after just ten laps had been completed. He knew he wasn't racing for a top position, but the points he earned for his seventh-place finish could make a difference in the championship.
"We couldn't have fixed the suspension by ourselves," notes Golinello. "It's incredible how everyone stepped up to help, especially when their cars were all out on track racing. I don't think that would happen in any other series."
From Autobahn, Golinello headed to Indianapolis, where his Mustang is currently being prepped for racing this weekend at Mid-Ohio. With the announcement that the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge will not compete in 2011, Golinello and several other Mustang Challenge competitors will try their hand in World Challenge this weekend.
"The goal is to have some fun this weekend, and to check out the series in case we run there next year," says Golinello. "We'll be underpowered with our current package, but it will be a good chance to see how things go."
Golinello's final Ford Racing Mustang Challenge races will be held at Miller Motorsports Park the weekend of September 11-12. The double-header round will wrap up Golinello's rookie season in racing.
