Stock Car Championship Series (SCCS) completes its inaugural race.
Location: Kershaw SC, Sunday April 21, 2002
Ron Farris of Lynchburg, VA took the checkered flag as the Stock Car Championship Series (SCCS) opened its inaugural season Sunday at the Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC. Bill Bratton, of Crows, VA took second place.
"We had a great turn out of SCCS race teams and supporters for this event, and we are looking for a larger turn out at our next event June 22-23 at Summit Point Raceway" said Lynnie Doughton, SCCS Series Director.
Dennis Zainfeld, SCCS Race Director, said,"The road racing venue provided our drivers with some new experiences. Some of our drivers had only raced ovals in the past while this was the first opportunity for those drivers with road race experience to compete in a stock car."
Fariss battled back from a first lap spin to finish first in his Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Fariss is an accomplished Grand American driver, based out of Lynchburg, VA, Farris Racing Enterprise's race team crew included, Donie Cash, Steve Pruitt, Chip Collingwood, and Johnny Thompson.
Bratton's racing experience includes late model stock car racing and classic modified racing in Virginia.
Three-time SCCA national GT-S champion Jeff Werth, of Silver Spring, MD took third place. Werth has recently competed in late model stock car series in VA.
The wild ride of the day came on lap four when Mike Brown, of Blue Ridge, VA pulled out of an on-track 720 degree spin down the back straight and finished in fourth position.
John Martin, of Cornelius, NC was passed by Fariss on lap and then finished off his original poll winning speed after a mechanical problem but finished in fifth position.
The event was hosted by the National Auto Sports Association (NASA-VA) during their Moonshine Run event. The SCCS race was in addition to the normal NASA-VA 14 car classes' event.
SCCS, LCC is the founder of the Stock Car Championship Series (SCCS), which is a professional Stock Car Road Racing Series consisting of eight events throughout the eastern United States. SCCS combines the excitement of bump & grind stock car racing with the driving challenge of first class road course venues. SCCS cars are purpose built race chasses with 1999-2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlos, Ford Taurus, Pontiac Grand Prix and Dodge Intrepid bodies with 400+ horsepower.
