Scirocco R-Cup: Champions from music and motorsport vs. 5,500 hp

Experienced hp heroes from DTM and Formula 1 and a musician competing against juniors and seasoned campaigners: Volkswagen again puts a spectacular driver mix on the track at the second race of the Scirocco R-Cup season to be held at the EuroSpeedway.

The three former DTM racers Kurt Thiim (Denmark), Harald Grohs (Germany) and Klaus Niedzwiedz (Germany) and the former Formula 1 drivers Jan Lammers (Netherlands) and Slim Borgudd (Sweden), who was a successful musician as well, will match their skills in a direct competition against the 20 regular drivers of the world's most eco-conscious one-make cup on 04 and 05 June. The identical racing car in the competition is the centrally fielded Scirocco R-Cup with a push-to-pass system for better overtaking manoeuvres and a biogas engine delivering up to 202 kW (275 hp). Despite the enormously powerful and sporty line-up of the Volkswagen one-make cup - just the vehicles of the regular entrants combined put 5,500 hp onto the track - the Scirocco R-Cup thanks to its eco-conscious powertrain concept emits 80 per cent less CO2 compared with conventional fuels.

"The debut of the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup at Hockenheim met with a lot of positive response," says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "In addition to the innovative technologies of our new one-make cup the new sporting format hit the bull's eye. Not only the permanent entrants but the legends too delivered suspense galore on the track. It was great to see that the spectators and drivers alike enjoyed the race. I'm sure that the second round at the EuroSpeedway will be equally successful - particularly with true racers like Thiim, Grohs, Lammers and company on the grid."

Touring car experience galore: Grohs, Thiim and Niedzwiedz

Loaded with touring car experience and duelling power, Harald Grohs, Kurt Thiim and Klaus Niedzwiedz will go into the Scirocco R-Cup race at the Eurospeedway. In 1986, 1988, 1989 and 1990 they directly competed against each other in the DTM. And the biographies of each reflect veritable success stories: Kurt Thiim celebrated 19 DTM victories and the 1986 title win, Harald Grohs' track record shows seven DTM race wins, Klaus Niedzwiedz' six. Five national titles - from Formula V to the German Touring Car Championship and the 24-hour races at the Nurburgring went to Grohs, Thiim and Niedzwiedz in total. In addition to the DTM, the trio contested countless other series - from the Sportscar and Touring Car World Championships, Super Touring Cars and V8STAR all the way to the Endurance Championship at the Nurburgring.

Formula 1 drivers from the Netherlands and Sweden: Lammers and Borgudd

Jan Lammers is truly a multi-talent: European Formula 3 Champion in 1978, 23 Formula 1 races between 1979 and 1992, more than 20 runs at the Le Mans 24 Hours, which he won in 1988, winner of the 1990 Daytona 24 Hours, former owner of the A1 Team Netherlands, founder of the Racing for Holland team in 2001, Race Truck entrant in the 2010 Dakar Rally. These are just a few career stations of the successful Dutchman who will be 54 three days before his racing commitment with Volkswagen. The racer from Zandvoort even made it into the Guinness Book of Records: on the occasion of his 25-year racing anniversary in 1998 he contested all seven races on the event calendar of his home track on a single day.

While Jan Lammers is arguably familiar with the entire repertory of motorsport, Slim Borgudd symbolises two highly different worlds: the Swede was a musician but also became a racer and made it all the way into Formula 1. His career as a musician started with a school band and in parallel he launched his motorsport career in junior formula categories - both with remarkable success: in music, after his stint with the band "Made in Sweden", he advanced to become the studio drummer for the famous pop group Abba of his acquaintance Bjorn Ulvaeus. In the 1979 Formula 3 European Championship, which Alain Prost won, he finished third. In 1981 he made his Formula 1 debut with the German ATS team as Jan Lammers' successor and even scored a championship point. A year later, Ken Tyrrell signed him as Michele Alboreto's team-mate. Borgudd went on to contest touring and sports car races before switching to the truck scene in 1993. There, the Scandinavian won the European Championship title in the Super Race Truck category in 1995. Now 63 years old, the Swede founded his own racing team, Slim Racing, in the Radical racing series in 2009.
