BOWMANVILLE, ONT., CAN. (May 22, 2004) - Franklin Futrelle, of Augusta, Ga., won Round Six of the Formula SCCA Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, at Mosport International Raceway. Completing the top-three is David Jurca, of Federal Way, Wash. and Kristoffer Szekeres, of Hartland, Mich.
Under overcast skies and light rain beginning to fall, the Formula SCCA Championship rolled on to the front-straight for the second race at Mosport. At the drop of the green flag, the field went three-wide into turn one. Taking the lead into turn two, Futrelle immediately came under attack from Goulart. Running nose-to-tail the lead duo began to swap positions around the track, with Futrelle repeatedly leading at the start finish. On lap four, Goulart spun off-course in turn two, but was able to rejoin in fourth place. Running alone, Futrelle, in the No. 97 Meco Inc. of Augusta Comprent Motorsports Formula SCCA, steadily built a sizeable lead. Behind the leader, a great battle ensued for third through fifth place. While battling for position, Goulart and Potolicchio had contact, destroying Goulart's front wing and nose box. With debris still falling from the car, Goulart pitted for repairs, before retiring later in the race. Having been ruled to have caused the incident, Potolicchio was given a pitlane drive through penalty. As the race progressed, Jurca ran uncontested in the No. 14 Motion Dynamics Racing Formula SCCA. In the closing stages of the race, Potolicchio, have served his penalty, closed on Szekeres, but was unable to make a pass. At the checkered flag, Futrelle had won his second Formula SCCA Championship race by 33.59 seconds.
"The start very tricky," said Futrelle, who remains second in the championship standings with 140 points. "Once Elivan [Goulart] went off-course, I just tried to run consistent laps to the checkered flag. Hopefully we can continue to gain points than Elivan."
"I was a pretty uneventful race for me," said Jurca. "The track was pretty difficult in those opening laps."
"I very happy to be here on the podium," said Szekeres, who scored his first podium finish. "I had a good car and enjoyed myself today."
Completing the top-five is Potolicchio, of Venezuela, in the No. 22 Fondo Unico Social Comprent Motorsports Formula SCCA and Anthony Gigliotti, of Miami Beach, Fla., in the No. 7 Lucky Brand/KML Motion Dynamics Racing Formula SCCA.
