Longtime vintage, historic and SCCA club racer, organizer and instructor Peter Krause was presented with the 2004 Hubert Kleinpeter Memorial Trophy at the SVRA Spring Fling at Roebling Road Raceway on April 3. Krause was recognized for his efforts promoting and driving small-bore production, sports racing and Sports 2000 cars over the last 15 years.
SCCA National Champion Rollin Butler and his wife, Francis, longtime friends and compatriots of Kleinpeter, founded the Hubert Kleinpeter Memorial Trophy in 2001. The Butlers, together with Andy Greene, owner of Royale Americas, and Robert Browsky, comprise the nominating committee. First awarded in April 2002 at the Walter Mitty Challenge at Road Atlanta to Formula Ford ace Frank Hammette, the Trophy was awarded to Vintage Garage owner and driver Vaughn Rockney in 2003.
Kleinpeter had an affinity for small-bore sports cars, sports racers and formula cars. He was the epitome of the avid small-bore racer and this award is intended to honor the driver, crew member and/or car owner who best exemplifies Hugh's spirit and skill in this class of car. Hugh greatly appreciated and admired those who gave their all to extract the most performance out of those cars with the least engine displacement. Hugh relished the "David-vs-Goliath" battles when small bore met big bore and, sometimes, prevailed.
The Kleinpeter Award has found a permanent, perpetual home with SVRA, to be presented annually at their Spring Fling event at Roebling Road Raceway near Savannah, Georgia. Roebling Road Raceway was Kleinpeter's favorite circuit, and the very last track on which he competed before his untimely death due to illness in 2001.
Kleinpeter's widow, Edie, together with their son Kenny and daughter Karen, Rollin and Francis Butler, Bob Browsky and Andy Greene presented the trophy to Krause at the Saturday-evening ceremony.
"I was honored to know and be considered a friend of Hubert's," said Krause. "I am delighted to carry on his legacy in promoting, restoring and driving small-bore sports racers and, now, Sports 2000 cars. Hubert was a Sports 2000 SCCA Divisional Champion and inextricably linked to the formation and phenomenal growth of this exciting class of purpose-built racing car almost 25 years ago."
"We enjoyed a wonderful relationship. He was a gentleman first and foremost, an educated, witty and urbane man, a racer and a true friend. To have been selected to receive the 2004 Hubert Kleinpeter Memorial Trophy is simply extraordinary, and completely unexpected."
Krause serves as chief instructor for both the SVRA and the North Carolina Region of the SCCA. He organizes and manages track events for the VIR Motorsports Country Club and the VSCCA, in addition to serving as competition director for the VIR Gold Cup Historic Races. A Ferrari and Alfa Romeo mechanic, Krause's company specializes in the preparation of under 2.0-liter sports racing and various Italian and German production cars and sedans from a base located in Raleigh, N.C.
Krause received the 1991 BMW Cup at Lime Rock Park, the 1993 SVRA Professional Mechanic of the Year Award and the 1997 Vintage Motorsport Magazine Spirit of Vintage Racing Award, recognizing his contribution to the education of racing drivers. Krause holds a National Competition license from SCCA and licenses from SVRA, HSR, BMWCCA CR, VDCA and VSCCA and has achieved over 100 class and overall wins in 18 years of SVRA, SCCA, HSR, VDCA and BMWCCA competition.
Hubert Kleinpeter started racing in the late 1950s in a Berkeley B95 and began winning divisionally in the SCCA as early as 1967 driving a Lotus 23B. Racing a Chevron B8, he finished sixth overall and won the 2.0-liter class at the 1969 24 Hours of Daytona, repeating that feat three years later in a Lola T-212.
Kleinpeter was the SCCA Divisional Champion in Formula B for four years in a row and won the SCCA Southeast Division Sports 2000 title in 1987. He owned Royale Racing Cars from 1984 until 2001, and remained active in vintage racing until his untimely death. A trained zoologist who earned a degree in the study of law from the University of Virginia, Kleinpeter was a successful Key Biscayne, Fla., businessman, but was first and foremost, a "racer." He will be missed.
