LAKEVILLE, Conn. (October 13, 2001) - John Black, of Tahoe City, Calif., fended off recently crowned 2001 Champion Keith Scharf, of St. Louis, Mo., to win the season finale of the SCCA Pro Racing Pro Spec Racer series at Lime Rock Park, part of the Burnham Boilers 200 Weekend. Warren Stilwell, of Hartville, Ohio, completed the top-three. From the drop of the green, Black, No. 17 Ascent Racing Spec Racer, held his ground and stayed out in front to lead the first lap. It was no surprise to the rest of the field, as Black shattered the track qualifying mark earlier this afternoon by over a second, with a 0:59.336 (92.827 mph). The record time broke defending Champion Stilwell's mark of 1:00.537 (91.986 mph), from the inaugural race at Lime Rock in 2000. Black slowly extended to a two car lengths lead until Scharf, No. 82 Tech Hyper-V Spec Racer, made a great move on a lap 21 restart to take the point. Black was determined though, and made his move on lap 29 of the 32-lap event. Coming through turns 11 and 12, Black kept his foot down and blew by Scharf in a place no one else seemed brave enough to pass in. "I wasn't too concerned when he [Scharf] got around me," said Black. "For some reason, I seemed to be the only one out there that didn't lift in the last two turns. So, eventually, I knew I could get him back." En route to his second win on the season, Black averaged 61.739 mph over the 48.96-mile race and beat Scharf to the line by 0.669-seconds. Scharf, although having wrapped up the Championship coming into the race, remained focused and drove a very competitive race. "He [Black] was exceptional in the last two turns today," said Scharf. "He was like lightning though there and I had to hang on for everything I had to stay in front on Warren [Stilwell]." Stilwell, No. 28 Stilwell Racing Spec Racer, made some pre-race adjustments to the car, but didn't have enough for Black on this day. "We made a handling change actually right before the race," said Stilwell. "It seemed to work out pretty good, but we had some bad luck on the restarts and it hurt our finishing position." Completing the top five, both with career-best finishes, were Lee. J. Shumosic, of Norton, Mass., and Shawn Morrison, of Conway, N.H., respectively. Chris Dyson, of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., finished sixth, and with that, won Rookie of the Year honors. Dyson clinched the title after Richard Spicer, who led the rookie point chase coming into the season finale, fell off the pace with only two laps to go and finished 18th. The KML Greased Lightning Award of $300 went to Charlie Shears, of Houston, Texas. Shears, No. 21 W/S Racing Spec Racer, started from the 27th spot and finished 11th.
