A hard fought twelfth place finish at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, last weekend, was enough to secure the 2013 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Rookie of the Year award for CJ Wilson Racing's Stevan McAleer. With one race to go, the Glasgow born, New York based racer clinched the Monticello Motor Club sponsored award and in doing so picked up his second Rookie of the Year title in as many years.
For the 29 year old Scot this accolade represents another step forward in a professional career that, as recently as two years ago, looked to be over before it ever had a chance to begin. "It's amazing to think that at this time in 2011, I had no drive and not much prospect of one." McAleer explained. "CJ and the team took a chance on me and, to be honest, I would not be here if it wasn't for him".
In the intervening 24 months, McAleer has won the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, the 2012 SCCA Pro Mazda MX-5 Playboy Cup Championship as well as two rounds of the 2013 Continental Tires Sports Car Challenge.
Team owner, CJ Wilson, is confident that there is more to come from the Scot. "Stevan has come a long way in the last two racing seasons and we are so proud of him winning the Continental Tires Rookie of the Year award. Hard work, heaps of talent, and a charming accent are a tough combination to beat! I'm proud to have him race for the team, and to have him cross the line for our first ST class win earlier this year. We definitely see big things in Stevan's future."McAleer's co-driver in the Number 5 ModSpace MX-5, Marc Miller, is also thrilled with the award. "I can't tell you how happy I am to have played a role in Stevan's Rookie of the Year title this season. Grand-Am and Monticello Motor Club will definitely be presenting this award to the most deserving candidate based on talent and performance. I will be very excited to see him accept his prize."
"ModSpace is so proud of Stevan," stated William Mann, Vice President of Motorsports for ModSpace. "Stevan is a great individual and deserves this Continental Tire Series Rookie of the Year Award. He has done a great job on track, and he continues to be an outstanding ambassador for the ModSpace brand. He's an impressive driver and has the talent to continue to win races and compete for championships."
McAleer and Miller will look to add to their win total at the final Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge event of the season at Lime Rock Park, Connecticut on Friday, September 27th
