MIATA CUP TOUR CHAMPIONS TO BE CROWNED THIS WEEKEND
TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 26, 2005) -- SCCA Pro Racing's Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Atlantic and Pacific Tours conclude this weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and Infineon Raceway, respectively, meaning drivers have one more doubleheader weekend to steal a Championship away from the current leaders.
The Atlantic Tour runs Rounds Seven and Eight this weekend as part of the EMCO Gears Road Racing Classic at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Defending series Champion Payton Wilson, of Gainesville, Va., hopes that his 18-point cushion over Tom Long is sufficient to keep the No. 1 on the door of his King RAT Motorsports/OG Racing 1999 Miata. Wilson comes off a doubleheader weekend win at Mosport International Raceway in June, a feat he accomplished in 2004 en route to his first professional Championship.
Long carried his No. 16 Race Sports/Race Engineer 1990 Miata to a pair of second place finishes at Mosport, and scored his own doubleheader win at Lime Rock Park in May. Todd Buras is 21 points behind Wilson in his No. 56 Krispy Kreme Doughnuts/BSI Racing 1994 Miata, and was the early point leader after sweeping the doubleheader opener at Road Atlanta. He looks to rebound after a disappointing last three rounds, which saw him off of the podium.
Jim Daniels (No. 47 specmiata.com 1990 Miata) and Jason Saini (No. 28 Motorsports Exchange/Hawk Brakes 2000 Miata) complete the top five in points entering the finale, albeit more than 40 behind leader Wilson.
On the left coast, Justin Hall, of Davis, Calif., need only finish in front of his nearest rivals in the first race of the doubleheader as part of the Argent Mortgage Grand Prix at Infineon Raceway to clinch his first professional racing Championship. Driving his No. 12 Off Camber Racing 1990 Miata, Hall has a 34-point lead entering Round Five of the six-round slate--the maximum points available at any race. Terry McCarthy is second to Hall (127-93) in points in the No. 29 FMG/880 Trailer/Rebello Racing Engines 1995 Miata. McCarthy was able to move into second in points at Portland despite having an engine miss all weekend. McCarthy should be very fast on his home track, but needs some help in order to have a shot at the title.
Terry's father, Tom (No. 27 880 Trailer 1999 Miata), is third in points, with 71, followed by Brad Rampelberg's No. 13 Off Camber Racing 1990 Miata (66 points) and Carlo Sparacio No. 2 TC Motorsports/Group 2 Motorsports (64 points).
Both the Atlantic and Pacific Tour hold races Saturday and Sunday afternoons. For full information, please visit www.scca.com/Pro/MiataCup.asp.
