Outstanding SCCA® Convention comes to a close in Kansas City.
TOPEKA, Kan. (February 11, 2003) The annual Sports Car Club of America National Convention came to a close Saturday night at the Westin Crown Center in Kansas City, Mo. The three-day event was described as unlike any other, with a new enthusiasm catching throughout the nationwide SCCA membership and staff.
"I've had members that have been to more than 20 SCCA National Conventions, who have been members for over 40 years, come up and tell me that this was the best convention ever," said Steve Johnson, SCCA President and CEO. "This was perhaps our most important convention in that we're coming off of a big move and staff turnover. I'm proud to say that the Club is as healthy as ever, and we've positioned ourselves for future growth and partnerships that will continue to re-establish the SCCA as one of the motorsports leaders.
"We've already begun our planning for the 2004 Convention (also in Kansas City, Mo.), which will make it the biggest, best event ever, and beneficial to all members."
In addition to three days of activities including reports on the state of the Club and seminars geared toward leadership, including many classes from the new SCCA University, the SCCA unveiled its new marketing program to attract the next generation SCCA member and ensure a strong organization for generations to come.
The new marketing campaign, presented by SCCA VP of Marketing Garret Mudd, is designed to "Explode the illusion of the Secret Car Club of America" by building the SCCA brand, presenting a dynamic picture of the SCCA, supporting regional marketing efforts and seeking to attract the next generation of SCCA enthusiasts. Mudd introduced new SCCA printed promotional materials featuring the new "Get Real...FAST" campaign. The campaign and materials, designed to effectively reach a younger audience, were developed with the assistance of Trozzolo Creative Resources, which also produced a new high-energy five- minute video that captures the essence of the SCCA like never before.
"The SCCA is the most diverse racing organization in North America and we intend to showcase how easy it is to make motorsports a real part of your life," said Mudd. "The SCCA stages over 2,000 events each year and whether you want to be a driver or get involved at another level, the opportunity exists."
As a part of the new campaign, the SCCA announced its new youth-oriented program called "First Gear," which replaces the current Speed Freakz program. The new program offers a discounted membership and benefits for individuals 21 and under.
As part of the festivities, the Convention-ending banquet included the presentation of SCCA's highest honors and awards. The award winners were: Lindsey Wilson (Solo Cup for significant contributions to the Solo program), Christopher Duplessis (Tom McKean Award for a singe act of sportsmanship), Ken Patterson (Dave Morrell Award for outstanding steward), Doug Reed (John McGill Award for significant contributions to the Club Racing program), Keith Grant (Kimberly Cup for most improved SCCA Club Racing Driver), Doug and Andrew Prendeville (Jim Fitzgerald Rookie of the Year for SCCA Club Racing), Larry Hansen (President's Cup for SCCA Valvoline Runoffs excellence) and Roger Eandi (Woolf Barnato Award, the highest SCCA honor for outstanding continued service to the organization).
