March 21, 2002: The Washington DC Region of the Sports Car Club of America announced today that Mazda Motorsports Development would be a establishing a contingency program for the 4th Annual Kumho Tires 12 Hours at the Point. The 12 Hours at the Point, an endurance race for sports cars and sedans, is the longest endurance race held in the Middle Atlantic and attracts competitors from across the U.S. The May 31-June 1 event will be held at Summit Point Raceway in Summit Point, West Virginia.
"Mazda is one of the strongest supporters of grassroots motor sports and the Region is happy to have Mazda as one of our contingency sponsors," said Don Caldwell, Regional Executive. Mazda's have done very well in previous stagings of the event -- four Mazda's placed in the top 10 in the 2001 12 Hours at the Point and the 2000 overall winners were in a Mazda Miata.
The highest overall placing team racing a Mazda will be eligible for $400 from Mazda Motorsports Development. The second highest Mazda-equipped team will be eligible for $200 and the third highest eligible Mazda-equipped team will earn $100.
