Several records fall in first day of Kohler/SCCA Chicago Region June Sprints®

ELKHART LAKE, WISC. (JUNE 21, 2003) -- It was supposed to be a match of drivers' wits against the track's unforgiving features. Instead, it was more a match of the drivers against the clock as several drivers set new qualifying records in the first two days of action at the 48th Kohler/SCCA Chicago Region June Sprints®.

Cloudless skies and temperatures in the 70s and 80s left the Road America four-mile track wide open for top driving in every group, including Groups Four, Five and Seven where old qualifying marks were tossed by the wayside. In group four, the top five qualifiers all beat the old mark set in 2001 by Tony Rivera.

Topping the list in Group Four was Rivera, of Littleton, Colo., who beat his own E Production, record-qualifying time by more than three seconds. Rivera drove his TR Rotorsports/Hoosier Tire/Mazda Mazda RX-7 to a time of 2:31.647 seconds in Friday's first qualifying session (knocking off his record time of 2:34.707) and captured the pole for Sunday afternoon's race over Grayson Upchurch, of Alpharetta, Ga., who guided his Goodyear/RedLine Oil/Rebello/Nissan Nissan 240SX to a time of 2:33.045 seconds. On Saturday, Rivera was again the group's top qualifier, running a time of 2:31.854.

Jon Brakke, of Fargo, N.D., finished three-tenths of a second behind Upchurch. David Lemon, of Signal Hill, Calif., and Ken Kannard, of East Troy, Wisc., filled out the rest of Group Four's top five.

In Group Five, Canadian Jacek Mucha, of Laval, Quebec, qualified second overall and broke the old C-Sports Racer qualifying mark of 2:11.854 set in 2001 by Tom Jagemann (who qualified first overall on Saturday in his Formula Atlantic Jagemann Stamping Co. Ralt RT41). Mucha sprinted to a time of 2:09.897 in his Orion Packaging Ralt JMS, beating the second-fastest CSR car in the group by more than six seconds.

The last driver to break new qualifying ground on Saturday was Scotty White, of Puyallup, Wash., in his Group Seven T1 Chevy Corvette Z06. Averaging just under 97 miles-per-hour, White zoomed to the pole postion for Sunday, by beating Cindy Lux's NayKidRacing/Kumho/RedLine/Kodiak Dodge Viper. Lux is also from Puyallup.

Groups Seven, Eight and Nine will begin the final day of the Chicago Region June Sprints® and run their final qualifying session beginning at 8:00 A.M. (CDT).
