Marlowe Captures G Production SCCA National Championship
By: SCCA Public Relations staff

TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 13, 2007) - Jay Marlowe, of Hendersonville, N.C., led every lap in the G Production race to capture his first National Championship at the 2007 SCCA National Championship Runoffs Presented by AT&T at Heartland Park Topeka. Chuck Mathis, of St. Jacob, Ill., and Woody Deatherage, of Boca Raton, Fla., completed the top three.

Marlowe started on the outside of the front row and quickly took the lead heading into Turn One. Driving the No. 21 Toyota/TRD/Goodyear/LNA Toyota Corolla, Marlowe did not waste any time separating himself from the pack. Marlowe's early lead did not last long as the race was black flagged to retrieve Chris Himes' No. 7 Hoosier/Carbotech/Buzz Thru Honda Civic from between Turns Two and Three. Himes made contact with the inside retaining wall on lap four.

When the race resumed on lap five, it did not take Marlowe long to open up a lead though defending GP Champion Mathis tried to catch him in his No. 54 247-parts.com/Hoosier/Ground Control Volkswagen Rabbit. But, in the end, Marlowe earned his first National Championship on his first attempt. He won by 7.049-seconds over Mathis.

"We had some troubles in qualifying, I actually broke the engine and we had to put it back together again," Marlowe. "I didn't know how it would run today, but I made the correct call on tires. We went on slicks, didn't go on intermediates and it definitely was the right call. We were running a couple seconds slower than qualifying but it came down to the right tires, the right gears, and just hitting my marks every lap."

Piloting the No. 69 Woody's Service/Hoosier Suzuki Swift GT, Deatherage had a great drive through the field from his 12th starting position, owing to a six-position penalty in qualifying, to finish third.

Larry Gallagher, of Thornville, Ohio, was the Sunoco Hard Charger for advancing four positions throughout the race. Gallagher started eighth and finished fourth. Ken Bouquillon, of New Milford, Conn., finished fifth.

The SCCA National Championship Runoffs® Presented by AT&T, The Pinnacle of American Motorsports, will crown Sports Car Club of America's Club Racing National Champions for the 44th-consecutive year in 2007. The best amateur drivers from across North America convene on Heartland Park Topeka's 2.5-mile road course each fall in what is considered the "Olympics" of motorsports. This year's event begins with four days of qualifying, Oct. 8-11, and concludes with three days of racing, Oct. 12-14.
