Follow-on to the shenanigans in the Cal Club AS tent. Robert Nagle (Mustang) sports a bumper sticker saying "Only little boys wear bowties." Curiously, his mascon r'Alf now has a freshly painted helmet--and a muzzle. Nagle examined the tie straps used to hang Alf and decided (after Steve Anderson remarked "they look British") that perhaps Bill Gilcrease, a GT5 Mini driver, was the villain to cause Alf's untimely demise. Or is it a Chevy AS frameup? (From the land of O.J., naturally.)
Michael Galati suffered an unpleasant surprise on the way to the track this morning. A deer lept into his Audi's path, met an untimely demise, shattered the Audi windshielf, and left Galati with a minor nose scratch. It didn't keep him off the track, however.
In an effort to make Formula Atlantic more affordable, and thus get the car count up, Tony Woodford is now making a conversion kit for Swift DB4s. The kit slots a Mazda 12A bridge-port engine into the Swift. This is basically a GT3-spec engine conversion. According to Steve Sanders at Mazda Competition Parts, the kit cuts engine costs by half while providing at least double the reliability of the existing engines. Contact Steve at 800.435.2508, or fax 717.727.6943, or e- mail 102724.3102@compuserve.com.
Provisional T1 pole winner Bob Endicott said his Prelude has the front wheel drive advantage when qualifying in the rain. "This is the first time I've had a chance to run against the V8 new-bodied Camaros. They definitely have a horsepower advantage, so we need the rain to even it out." He commented on their huge acceleration advantage, but said they can't put the power down in the wet. "Preludes are great cars, and have great ABS brake which really helps in the rain."
His wife Katie really pitched in to help him out. He first towed to Daytona from L.A. She helped with the first 24 hours to Houston, then she hopped a plane to get back in time for school. Next she took Southwest Airlines back to Daytona for the IMSA race there, flying with stops in El Paso, Kansas City, Nashville, to Orlando, then making the hour drive north to Daytona. After the race, they towed to Mid- Ohio, where she helped Bob get through registration and tech, then caught a flight back to L.A. Unfortunately, the flight (via Cincinatti) was delayed, so she missed her connection, so they put her on another flight that had a layover in St. Louis. She finally got in well after midnight. She'll be flying in again Friday morning at 6 AM. Bob's T1 race is at 11:00 AM. They hope to get out of tech quickly and immediately commence to tow back to L.A! As you can tell, Bob does this racing stuff pretty much with a crew of one.
As I sit here in the tower, I see the 23 FF facing the wrong way of the front straight. The track is still wet, but the rain has finally stopped. It was coming down heavy for a while, and a lot of drivers chose not to qualify today, expecting tomorrow to be better.
More notes later. I want to get results uploaded before SSA goes out. We're having dinner at the Bayou and I don't want to be too late up here.
