GOODYEAR GRABS NINE WINS, 24 PODIUMS IN SCCA RUNOFFS AT ROAD AMERICA

ELKHART LAKE, Wisc. (Sept. 26, 2010) -- Brian Schofield finally sat in the middle.

Schofield won his first Spec Racer Ford national championship when he won the SRF race at the Sports Car Club of America National Championship Runoffs presented by Subway at Road America. The title run came after finishing second at four straight Runoffs.

Each national champion meets the assembled media at the Runoffs, along with the second and third finishers. The champion always gets the middle seat.

"It feels good, finally," Schofield said, sitting between second and third finishing Scott Rettich and Mike Miserendino.

Goodyear capped the Runoffs with three wins Sunday, bringing the tiremaker's three-day total to nine wins, 24 podium finishes and six podium sweeps. Goodyear's Sunday winners were Schofield, Robert Warkocki (in GT3) and Juan Marchand (Formula Mazda).

Over the weekend, Goodyear's wins came in full-bodied Grand Touring (GT) and Production classes, as well as open wheeled Formula and Spec Racer classes. Seven drivers started from the pole position, having posted the best qualification laps on Goodyear tires.

"Our Goodyear Eagles were very productive this weekend," said Goodyear's Steve Petrescu. "Our radials and bias-ply tires both won races and poles. The Runoffs make for a great showcase for our tires and we are very pleased."

Goodyear is the exclusive tire supplier for the SRF class. Most SCCA classes are open to competition among tiremakers but the SRF program is a tightly controlled class with virtually no mechanical variations allowed.

"These Goodyear tires, they stick really well throughout the heat cycle," Schofield said. "

I don't know, but I'll bet you my fastest lap was two or three from the end."

Warkocki's win was his first in 16 Runoffs. The victory left him uncertain he had actually won.

"I'm amazed," Warkocki said. "I'm afraid the alarm might go off and I'll wake up."

He woke up midway through the race when he found himself at the front of the field.

"After that it was, 'Oh my God, I'm in the lead. Don't do anything to screw this up.'" Warkocki grinned.

The GT3 class features opposing tiremakers but the other podium finishers, like Warkocki, raced on Goodyear tires. Mike Henderson and Mike Cyphert finished second and third behind Warkocki.

Marchand's victory was quite dramatic. He qualified sixth but started at the back of the field when he reported late to the staging area for the race. Marchand had to drive all out in order to get to the front. He was able to take advantage of a full course caution that tightened the field of cars. That full speed charge toward the front was a lot of work.

"I want to thank Goodyear for coming out with a really good tire for this year," Marchand said. "They have this new lightweight (tire) that is just awesome. It's an awesome, light tire."

Darryl Wills and Mike Anderson finished second and third behind Marchand, completing a Goodyear sweep.

Rick Harris finished second and Bill Wessel was third in F Production. The Goodyear family of companies scored another podium finish when Mark Boden finished second on Dunlop tires in GT2. Boden started on pole.
