GOODYEAR BAGS THREE MORE WINS AT SCCA RUNOFFS
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Sept. 26, 2009) -- Mike Miserendino won the Spec Racer Ford race in dramatic fashion to highlight three Goodyear-shod winners in the second day of the 2009 Sports Car Club of America National Championship Runoffs at Road America.
The other Goodyear-equipped winners on Saturday included Juan Marchand in Formula Mazda and Ric Bushey in GT3.
Charles Hearn, the Houston driver who started 10th in the Formula Vee field and finished second, echoed the thoughts of many drivers that raced on Goodyears when he said, "I am so pleased (with his Goodyear tires). When the new compound came out, I tried it and really enjoyed it. It gives you better straight line speed because there is less rolling resistance."
Including the three wins, there were 10 drivers who used Goodyear tires to earn podium finishes Saturday. Goodyear's two-day Runoffs totals come to five wins, 16 podium finishes and four podium sweeps.
Miserendino won the SRF title for the fourth year in a row after trailing Brian Schofield for 12 of the 13 laps around the 4.0-mile, 14-turn road course. Schofield started the race on the pole position and, after Schofield grabbed the lead as the field charged around the track on the first lap, Miserendino tucked in behind the leader and drafted behind Schofield for 12 laps.
"I wasn't holding back," Miserendino said. "I was kind of hanging on. We (he and Schofield) sort of equalized at the end. I was definitely not sandbagging."
Miserendino made his move between turns five and six on the final lap, putting two tires in the grass as he worked his way by Schofield. The cars made contact, but both kept going.
Schofield, Lakeland, Fla., finished second and Richard Spicer, Laurel, Maryland, took third.
Bushey, of Virginia Beach, Va., said a pre-race conversation he had in the Goodyear tent helped him with the chassis preparation. He was concerned with the weather conditions.
"We worked with your (Goodyear) guys quite a bit," Bushey said. "I think Mike (Knox of Competition tire) has the best Internet connection at the track. I was on pins and needles but Mike said, 'Don't worry about it, it's going to be a sunny race.'"
The sun was out when Bushey's race started and Bushey had to chase Mike Henderson for much of the event. Henderson, of El Cajon, Calif., finished second and John Black, Olympic Valley, Calif., was third.
Marchand, of South Haven, Mich., led every lap of the Formula Mazda race and said, "I want to thank Goodyear for giving me the best tires that are out there--(winning) feels great. I'm real happy. I can't wait to see my family and my friends."
Bruce Lawrence, Sanford, N.C., finished second to Marchand and Darryl Wills, Deer Park, Texas, was third.
The Runoffs continue with eight more races Sunday.
