SCCA Club Racers Vie for First Super Sweep Awards at 2009 Runoffs

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Sept. 24, 2009) -- The very first SCCA Club Racing Super Sweep Winners will be crowned this weekend at Road America, during the running of the 2009 SCCA National Championship Runoffs.

Introduced at the 2009 SCCA National Convention, the Super Sweep is the most difficult honor an SCCA Club Racer can achieve. The award has four components; a driver must win one of nine key National races, his or her Divisional Championship, a National Championship and the newly created nationwide point standings, all in a single class. With the first two components already wrapped up, the next three days of racing at the National Championship Runoffs will determine which drivers will walk away with the first-ever Super Sweep honors.

In A Sedan, defending National Champion Andy McDermid, of Grand Ledge, Mich., could be on the cusp of claiming a Super Sweep. The Central Division AS Champion is currently second in the nationwide point standings and qualified his No. 24 Felice Racing Engines/Hoosier Ford Mustang on the pole. McDermid trails Shawn Gray in the National point standings, but Gray, who qualified his No. 09 BGR, Inc. Pontiac Firebird in fourth for the AS National Championship race, was unable to collect one of the nine key National race wins.

Local driver Michael Varacins, from Burlington, Wis., practically has a Formula Vee Super Sweep wrapped up. The Central Divison FV Champion and National point leader qualified his No. 65 Speed Sport Eng./Hoosier/Veetech Speed Sport AM-5 on the pole by nearly two seconds. His nearest Super Sweep competition, Alan Harrington, of Mulino, Ore., is 15th on the grid in his No. 47 Woodstock Racing/Peak Performance Protoform P3.

The results of Friday's C Sports Racing race will determine who, if anyone, will come away with a Super Sweep award. The top three candidates, Don Simmons, of Glendale, Calif., Jacek Mucha, of Laval, Quebec, and James French, of Sheboygan, Wis., have all qualified in top six.

A similar tale is playing out in Formula Mazda, where Darryl Wills, of Deer Park, Texas, and Juan Marchand, of South Haven, Mich., have each collected a key race win and an FM Divisional Championship and now lead the FM nationwide point standings heading into Friday's National Championship race. As luck would have it, Marchand has put his No. 44 Gingerman Raceway/Star Formula Mazda on the pole, with Wills' No. 02 Hillenburg Motorosports Star Formula Mazda completing the front row on the grid.

Tim Kautz, of Geneva, Ill., and Jeremy Treadway, of Putnam Station, N.Y., are both looking good for a Super Sweep. Kautz, the Central Division FF Champion has kept his No. 88 Braeburn/Hoosier/TwoDogg Piper DF3 at the top of the FF qualifying charts and Northeast Division FF Champion Treadway has done the same with his No. 12 Goodyear/Loynings/Stonebridge Swift DB-6.

S2000 polesitter Corey Fergus, of Powell, Ohio, stands a chance of earning a Super Sweep. The driver of the No. 07 Hoosier Tire/Fergus Companies Carbir CS2 will start the S2 race from the pole on Friday, while Mark Mercer, of Aurora, Colo., who is currently four points ahead of Fergus in the point standings, qualified his No. 34 Ferenco/Hoosier Tires Lola 2003 91/90 second.

In Showroom Stock C, Joel Lipperini, of Pittston, Pa., and Bill Hagerty, of Escondido, Calif., are separated by a single point in the SSC nationwide point standings. The two have also qualified one-two on the SSC grid. The Northeast Division SSC Champion Lipperini qualified his No. 81 RaceLabz/BFGoodrich/RaceShopp Acura Integra S on the pole by nearly a second over SoPac Divison Champion Hagerty in the No. 7 Hoosier Tire/Gemini Inc/Cobalt Chevrolet Cobalt S.

H Production Midwest Division Champion Chris Albin, of Maryland Heights, Mo., has his work cut out for him in the No. 3 Hoosier/247-parts.com Volkswagen Golf. The HP nationwide point leader qualified fourth for Sunday's race, while his nearest rival in the point standings, Central Division HP Champion Bob Kelly, of Crystal Lake, Ill., qualified his No. 0 TelSystems/Loop Racing Volkswagen Scirocco second.

A Super Sweep will be awarded in Touring 2 if Bill Baton, of Indianapolis, Ind., or Andy Wolverton, of Papillion, Neb., can claim the win. Both drivers are in the top four in the nationwide point standings and have earned their respective Divisional Championships.

Other strong candidates for a Super Sweep are Touring 1 competitor Lance Knupp, GTL drvier Peter Shadowen, Touring 3 driver John Costello, E Production driver Greg Ira, Formula Atlanta provisional polesitter Keith Grant, GT-1 driver Michael Lewis, F500 provisional polesitter Patrick Gallagher, GT-3 driver Mike Henderson and Formula Enterprises pilot Scott Rettich.

National Champion Racing begins Friday, Sept. 25, at Road America. Live timing and scoring is available at www.scca.com/runoffs. A full listing of nationwide point standings is also available at www.scca.com/club.
