More Records Fall at SCCA Runoffs, Including Number of Cars On Track
LEXINGTON, Ohio (Sept. 22, 2004) -- The best amateur race drivers in North America enjoyed perfect conditions for the second round of qualifying for this weekend's SCCA National Championship Runoffs® Presented by Kohler, with more records being shattered at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
After breaking 20 out of 24 track records on Tuesday, Wednesday brought early morning speed, and as the final day of qualifying approaches, only two class track records from 2003 remain in tact.
While there was plenty of speed, 21 of the 24 provisional pole winners from Tuesday were able to hold on after Wednesday's sessions. Of those 21, five lowered the target time from the initial of three sessions.
- John Heinricy, of Holly, Mich., still hopes to become just the eighth driver to win the pole in two classes during the same year, but his effort became more difficult Wednesday, as Kyle Watkins, of Broomfield, Colo., jumped to the top of the American Sedan charts. Watkins, driving a Ford Mustang, shattered the qualifying mark, and is a full 0.725-second ahead of defending class Champion Heinricy heading into Thursday's final session.
All is not lost for Heinricy, though. He still managed to lower the track record in Touring 1 and is 0.939-second ahead of second place, the largest margin of any of the 24 classes.
- Wilson Wright, of Stockbridge, Mass., didn't run on Tuesday, but made up for his absence on Wednesday, stealing the GT-4 provisional pole position away from Michael Mazziotti driving his Nissan Sentra.
- In addition to Heinricy, four drivers managed to defend their provisional pole positions and went faster on Wednesday. They were: Brad Stout, of Webster Groves, Mo., in Formula Vee; Pratt Cole, of Salt Lake City, Utah, in E Production; Mike Henderson, of El Cajon, Calif., in GT-3 and John Hill, of Seattle, Wash., in D Sports Racing.
- The closest battle is currently in G Production, where Mark Dennis, of Rochester, N.Y., stole the provisional pole away from Kent Prather, of Wakarusa, Kan., by a scant 0.020-second. Dennis' brother Kevin was the pole winner in the 2003 event, driving the same car.
- Mike Henderson, of El Cajon, Calif., now holds the honors for the biggest reduction in previous lap records. Driving his Mazda RX-7, Henderson is a full 1.826 seconds under the previous record. Henderson is not the only one going fast in GT-3, as Wolfgang Maike, of Santa Barbara, Calif., is just 0.063-second behind.
- Perhaps the biggest record that was broken today had nothing to do with speed, but quantity. A total of 717 drivers have turned official qualifying times, breaking the 2003 record of 696. That number is expected to rise on Thursday, as several drivers are still anticipated to arrive to the event.
Qualifying for the 2004 SCCA National Championship Runoffs Presented by Kohler resumes Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. (EDT). To follow all of the Live Timing & Scoring Presented by Yokohama, and view today's results, visit www.scca.com.
