Team NayKid Racing walks away with track record at Road America

PUYALLUP, Wash. -- June 25, 2003 -- Team NayKid Racing had a bittersweet race weekend at the 48th annual Kohler/SCCA June Sprints at Road America on June 20, 21 and 22. All three NayKid Racing Kumho Tire/Redline Oil/Kodiak Racing Wheel Z06 Corvettes sponsored by Suburban Chevrolet Corvettes experienced their own set of difficulties, but managed to finish with one teammate on the podium, pole position starting the race and a track record.

This past weekend marks the first time the Z06 Corvette squad has run into problems all season. The weekend began with Cindi Lux running second during Friday practice session; team owner and driver Scotty B. White experienced a clutch problem during the session and as a result, finished fifth during practice. Rick Gilhart lost a timing chain during the practice session and had to retire his Corvette racing machine. However, Gilhart wasn't going to give up his weekend and decided to rent a Neon for the weekend and compete in the SSC class.

Saturday's first round of qualifying was a high note for the team with White breaking the track record at Road America with a time of 2:28.8 and Lux qualifying right behind her teammate. Sunday's second round of qualifying brought Lux to third on the grid with White remaining in pole position.

When the green dropped on Sunday, White battled with the number two position car with nose-to-tail racing for the first lap of the race. Throughout the battle, a lot of contact was made with White and the second position car. White was unceremoniously punted off course by the second place car and lost his lead from first to 12th with teammate Lux taking the lead for second lap. With White's calculated driving skills, he was able to climb back up to fourth position when the over rev of the engine caused during the punt by the second position car caught up to him and the motor seized. Lux was running a strong third when her right front tire went flat from debris picked up from crashes by other cars on track and came off the wheel, causing a premature end to the race for both Corvettes. Gilhart finished third in SSC class with his rental Neon. Because both Lux and White completed more than 50 per cent of the race, they weren't listed as a DNF.

"Despite our problems this weekend, I really feel good about what we did. We broke a track record and the Corvettes were really handling second to none. I feel really inspired with the help from Kumho tire and Suburban Chevrolet. Our heads are not hanging, we're ready to come back and continue our great season," Lux said.

"Holy moly! I knew this team was getting faster this year and the Kumhos were rockin' but to go snatch a track record from the fastest Viper in the country on the best Viper track there is...YEAH BABY! The cool thing is that it wasn't power, the Viper left me for dead at the start but we were on him again by turn two. It was the awesome handling of the Kumho V700 tires and my lil 'ol hot rod Corvette, this 'ol girl is five years old but she still rocks! I felt terrible for Cindi, I am sure she could have won this deal, we really had 'em covered. What a team, Rick even put an SSC car on the podium with a NayKid Racing sticker, way to go Rick," White chuckled of his weekend fiasco.

Based in Puyallup, Wash., NayKid Racing was formed in 1999 by team owner and driver Scotty B. White. White is involved in the growth and administrative functions of the team.
