The Brand-New Merloy DSR Makes Impressive Debut at Valvoline Runoffs
LEXINGTON, Ohio, Sept. 25 - The brand-new Merloy SCCA D-Sports Racer (DSR) qualified eighth and ran as high as third in its championship race at the 40th anniversary edition of the Valvoline Runoffs last weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, impressing everyone in its debut race.
Unfortunately its driver, former DSR national champion Al Beasley Jr. of Windham, Ohio, was then hit from behind, which forced the car to drop out of the race.
Still, it was a good debut for Merloy Racing, which is owned by renown engineer Alan Mertens, IndyCar star Al Unser Jr. and businessman Mike Maloy. The company plans to test the car this winter, make some refinements, and be ready for a full assault on the DSR world when the 2004 season opens in January.
Beasley's car, which is for sale, has a Loyning's Yamaha R1 engine. The Merloy can be fitted with Kawasaki, Suzuki or Honda engines too.
The race was won by polesitter Mark Jaremko of Spokane, Wash., the 2002 DSR national champion.
The event will be televised on SPEED Channel at noon Eastern time on Sunday, Dec. 7. It will be repeated during the Runoffs Marathon on the same network on Christmas Day.
