SCCA® ProRally Championship Round 5
Susquehannock Trail
WELLSBORO, Pennsylvania Over 85 performance rally cars from across North America and the World are entered in the 26th Susquehannock Trail Rally, the oldest continuously active SCCA ProRally Championship event in the country. The one-day event will be held on Pennsylvania state forest roads in the "Endless Mountains" to the South and West of Wellsboro. The rally starts Saturday morning, 01 June at 10:31 AM EST sharp, following an hour-and-a-half Parc Expose of all the performance rally cars entered.
Late Breaking News:
· Weather: As was the case last year, late spring rains can play havoc with team event strategies. Some thunderstorms caused local flooding, and steady light rains have been falling in Wellsboro all week, with the forecast calling for more of the same well into Friday. While it is still possible that some drying out will occur by the start of the rally on Saturday, causing some stages to be dusty, others are expected to be extremely slick and dust free, keeping the rest of the pack in the hunt. Two year's ago, the famous Water Crossing at the end of SS1 was cancelled due to high water, but it appears that this year the stage will happen, as the water level is 'right at' the go/no go threshold.
· New to SCCA ProRally, but not new to extreme motorsport, is a family name familiar to motorsport fans worldwide - Robby Unser is expected to be making his performance rally debut this weekend, with veteran co-driver Ed Wahl. Slated to be driving an SCCA Open class Subaru Impreza, Unser is making the jump from the roundtrack circuits of the Indy Racing League to SCCA ProRally, with an eye at returning the Unser name to Pikes Peak when the SCCA ProRally Championship makes its series debut there on June 29.
· All three Open class works teams have been very busy since Round 4, Rim of the World, with Subaru perhaps the busiest. Mark Lovell's #1 car, which rolled heavily on Day 1 in California was returned to the Prodrive shops in the UK to be completely re-shelled. Ramana Lagemann's #2 car, which lost its motor on day 2, has a new drivetrain. Manufacturers' Championship leader Hyundai is confident that it has its early transmission teething problems licked, and is expected to run very strong this weekend on roads that suit both its drivers and the prodigious horsepower of their motors well. Mitsubishi, working an uphill developmental battle on Rhys Millen's all-new Lancer Evo VII, may be the dark horse this weekend.
· Seamus Burke, last years driver's championship runner up, with Rory Kennedy return to the SCCA ProRally Championship after a 3 month hiatus, and will no doubt be placing even more 'independent pressure on the works teams of Hyundai, Subaru and Mitsubishi. Currently, the Championship is lead by David Higgins, in the independently entered AV Sport Subaru WRX. In the 2001 season, Burke, in his TAD Motorsports Mitsubishi Lancer, kept the works teams on their toes all season long.
