Tilbor Captures Inagural SCCA Sportscar Championship Pole

BRASELTON, GA. (April 23, 2004) - Neil Tilbor, of New Smyrna, of Fla., captured the pole position for Round One of the SCCA Sportscar Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, at Road Atlanta. Completing the top-three is Jonathan Holtzman, of Orchard Lake, Mich. and John Burke, of Rumson, N.J.

Racing in ideal conditions, the Sportscar cars had two qualifying sessions on Friday, with the first commencing early in the day. Having run a full day of testing on Thursday, the drivers immediately set about posting fast laps. Early in the session, Tilbor, in the No. 8 Taiyo Edge Ltd. SCCA Sportscar, jumped to the top of the charts, posting a time quicker than he had posted in testing. After pitting to make changes to the car, Holtzman bettered Tilbor's time at the halfway mark of the session. As the session progressed several drivers bettered their time, including Burke, in the No. 27 Rumson Capital Carbir Sports 2000, who maintained his third place position. At the checkered flag, Holtzman had captured the provisional pole position, with a time of 1:30.733 (99.192 MPH).

Run last in the day, the final Sportscar qualifying session was reduced to a split session with the Formula Ford Zetec Championship cars, after the planned Zetec Championship qualifying session earlier in the day was cancelled due to a timing and scoring mechanical failure. Attacking the 2.5-mile road course, it appeared none of the cars on course would be able to better their ties from the morning session. As the session progressed, Tilbor steadily began to lower his times, and with only five minutes remaining in the session, he posted a new lap record. At the checkered flag, Tilbor had captured the inaugural SCCA Sportscar Championship pole position with a lap of 1:30.505 (99.442 MPH).

"I'm pleased to have earned the first SCCA Sportscar Championship pole," said Tilbor, who previously was a front-runner in the SCCA Spec Pro Racer Series. "I thought I might have a shot at it so I kept pushing throughout the session. I think the car has a lot of potential and I will get quicker as I get more comfortable in the car."

Completing the top-five in qualifying is Duke Johnson, of Eureka, Mo., in the No. 16 Team Duke Racing Carbir Sports2000 and Marc Walker, of Oldsmar, Fla., in the No. 9 Comprent Motorsports Lola Sports 2000. Green flag for Round One of the SCCA Sportscar Championship is scheduled for to drop at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 24, 2004.
